MRS HETTY GREEN STILL HEADS
THE LIST AS THE WORLDS
RICHEST WOMAN
INTERESTING FIGURES
Mrs Russell Sage and Mrs E H Har
riman Not Far Behind Mrs
Green In Matter of Wealth
Large Incomes Shown v
Herald Special
New York Nov 21 Mrs Hetty
Green mistress of nearly one hun
dred millions will tomorrow enter up
on her seventyfifth year and at the
same time will begin her fortyfifth
year as a business woman during
which time she has accumulated a
fortune that Is estimated to be the
largest controlled by any woman in
the world
When E H Harriman died last fall
leaving all of his property to Mrs
Harriman a report was circulated to
the effect that the widow had thereby
becomethe richest woman in the
woiid Mr Harrimans wealth in real
and personal personal property was
estimated to amount to between 75
000000 and 100000000 But there is
every reason to believe that Mr Har
rimans five children together with
his surviving sister and other rela
tives had all been substantially pro
vided for in gifts out of hand and
trust funds set aside shortly before
the death of the financier Mrs Har
rimans share therefore is believed
not to have exceeded 30000000 or
60000000 so that in any event it Is
erroneous to credit her with possess
ing a fortune in excess of that o
Hetty Green which is estimated to
be close to the 10000000 mark and
may possibly exceed that figure
It is interesting to note that Amer
ica possesses not only the richest but
probably the three richest women In
the world Next to Hetty Green comes
Mrs Russell Sage with a fortune of
85000000 and third in line is Mrs
Harriman Mrs Frederick Cortland
Penfield Is credited with a fortuneof
60000000
The four women named Inherited
practically the entire estates of their
husbands Many other American wo
men have survived their millionaire
husbands but in few cases have the
widows received the entire estate
lJiub Cornelius
SadcrLilt fir loft
an estate of 125000000 but the wid
ows portion was only 2000000 and a
trust fund yielding 250000 a year
Mrs Marshall Field whose husbands
estate amounted to 200000000 re
ceived 3000000 as a wedding present
in lieu of dower interest Mrs O H
P Belmont received the whole of her
husbands estate of 5000000 Mrs
Morris K Jesup received a little over
half of the 13000000 left by her hus
band
Outside of the United States the
richest woman i believed to be Frau
Bertha von Bohlen who came into
possession of the 80000000 left by
her father the celebrated gun manu
facturer The Marchioness of Gra
ham by the death of her father the
Duke of Hamilton came Into posses
sion of an Income of nearly 800000
a year The Duchess of Roxburghe
who was Miss May Goelet Is credited
with possessing a fortune of 25000
000 Mrs S G Ascher daughter of
the late Harry Barnato is estimated
to be worth 10000000 The Count
ess Szechenyi who was Miss Gladys
Vanderbilt ispla ced on the list with
12000000 Mme Creel of Mexico is
said to have an income of 5000000 a
year The Baroness von Eckardstein
