conspiiacy to defraud the government
in connection with the Oregon land
fraud cases Binger Hermann former
member of congress was placed on
tiial in the United States district
court here today Hermann was in
dicted together with Senator Mitchell
H A Smith both deceased and ex
State Senator Mays Representative
Jones and George S Sorensen The
latter two were convicted in 190G
the Hermann trial being postponed
Hermann is alleged to have conspired
to have two hundred thousand acres
reserve transferred The prosecution
is under the direction of Francis J
Heney famous for his prosecutions in
the west and in San Francisco Her
mann was formerly a member of con
gress a former commissioner of pub
lic lands and for years a prominent
figure in northwestern politics

the Williamsburg docks of the sugar
trust who were convicted of manipu
lating the scales whereby the govern
ment was defrauded of duties to one
jear eacli In the penitentiary Oliver
Spitzer convicted with the above
men will be sentenced on the first of
February He is now in a hospital
recovering from a surgical operation
