COTTON BELT MAKES EYES
At the International and Great North

Austin Texas Jan 20 Edwin

and general manager of the Cotton
Belt Dwight C Harris W H Tay
lor and others in the party of Mr
Gould which is making a tour of the
state arrived here this afternoon and
will remain over until morning when
the party leaves for San Antonio To
day they called upon Governor Camp
bell the Railroad Commission and
others
It was very evident that the party is
making a very close inspection of the
International Great Northern rail
road property and stopped here until
tomorrow when it will work again on
the inspection by daylight From the
minute inspection being made of the
r
International and Great Northern it
is supposed that the Cotton Belt is
going to make some advances toward
acquiring it Nothing of this nature
however was broached to the Rail
road Commission today and the call
ot the party was purely social How
ever it is understood that some time
ago the Cotton Belt officials put this
proposition directly up to the com
mission and were informed by that
body that under the constitution and j
laws of the state the direct transfer
of the International Great Northern
property would be an impossibility
The exact plans of the Cotton Belt of
ficials are not known in this regard
It is well known that the Cotton
Belt has long wished for an outlet to
the Gulf of Mexico and another
theory advanced in regard to the trip
of this party is that they are tryingi
to make some arrangements for an
outlet to the gulf at Galveston by
tiackage arrangements with the Inter
national Great Northern another
Gould line this arrangement to give
the Cotton Belt more or less of a con
trol of that road It is not altogether
improbable that this idea is being
worked out by Mr Gould in his Texas
triii when he is inspecting the Inter
national Great Northern so careful
ly

A Goodly Response
The people came to this Sale of White
crowds of them And they came to buy
The public recognize our annual sale of white as
an unusually responsible event They wait for it
Scores of our friends asked about it in advance
for they remembered it from last year from the
year before
We start the week with fresh lots of white
Splendid offerings too priced to you as if cot
ton was still nine cents Let this reason with you
for with cotton at fifteen cents all of these
underwear and white goods offerings will climb
in price Your time is now and all this week

The Whitest White Sale in Palestine
j
was agreed upon some months ago
but has just gone into effect practi
cally At the recent meeting of the
board at Austin it was decided to do
away with a number of officers at the
penitentiary and as a result today
Underkeeper Joe G Summers Prison
Steward John T Tribble Bookkeeper
Pete Walton in the superintendents
office and Storekeeper Badgett and a
few other officers of minor importance
were all informed that the prison
force wasrun down to such an extent
that their services would no longer be
needed by the state
It was learned today that Assistant
Financial Agent F B Guinn had ten
dered his resignation some months
ago to go into effect February first
Judge Guinn was seen relative to the
matter and said that he would hold
over until the lease of the iron fur
nace to John L Wortham was effect
ed at which time his office will be
done away However Judge Guinns
connection with the flnacial agents of
fice will cease within the next thirty
days whether the property is leased
to Mr Wortham or not
It is learned on good auhority that
if the proposition to lease the furnace
to Mr Wortham goes through there
will be kept about 150 men to mine
the ore and this will constitute the
entire convict force at the prison
here If the proposition fails there
will be retained some forty or fifty
men to be worked upon a small farm
nearby for the purpose of taking care
of the buildings and raising vege
tables The state will likewise plant
some ISO acres in corn and perhaps
75 or more acres in cotton
The state has some fine truck lands
near the prison and out on the State
