Albany N Y Feb 8 Tqday saw
the formal opening of the investigation
of the state senate into the charges
bt ought against Jotham P Allds ma
jority leader and president pro tern
of that body The investigation which
is expected to last a week or longer
is to be conducted by the senate sit
ting as a committee of the whole
Tho charges were brought by Sen
ator Ben Conger who alleges that
Allds on April 23 1901 while a mem
ber of the assembly demanded re
ceived and accepted 1000 in con
sideration for his failure to press a
certain hill then pending before the
house Senator Allds has entered a
general denial of the charges made
against him
