PROSPERITY AT HOME
It is an old story but newly told
A gentleman just back from England
said to a Herald man the other day
that before leaving London he drop
ped into a highclass cafe ind ordered
a lunch Asked what he had extra
good to eat the waiter assured the
patron that he had some very fine
American steak something really
fine brought over from the states on
the hoof and slaughtered and dressed
in London The gentleman ordered
the steak along with some potatoes
and other side dishes and when he
was through the waiter gave him a
charge ticket for sixty cents Com
ing on to the states this same gen
fieman says he stopped in Fort Worth
thtkother night and again dropped
intoi high class cafe there Just as
an experiment he ordered identically
the same meal he bad ordered in Lon
don steak cutand all and when he
got the bill this time it was for 125
the steak alone being seventyfive
cents In one Instance the beef had
been shipped across the ocean while
In the other it was raised fattened
and slaughtered right at home Fig
ure that out as a means of prosperity
Another illustration is offered by a
farmer He had a dressed hogvto sell
and offered it to his butcher at the
market wholesale price After selling
it he decided he wanted to retain the
hams and shoulders and so notified
the butcher and he was agreeable
After the porker had been placed in
the market and cleaved the farmer
asked that he paid the balance due

BOARD OF TRADE TONIGHT
President Silliman of the Board of
Trade has called an important meet
ing of that organization for tonight
and urges that all members be pres
ent The special business to be taken
up is the launching of the button
campaign postponed from December
and the arranging of a list of prem
iums for the Boys Corn Club of the
county The button campaign idea
was originated several months ago
and was for the purpose of putting
the men of the town into the booster
class by tagging them with a booster
button the proceeds from the sale of
such buttons to be used as a special
fund to take care of new industries
offering to the city In other words
the fund thus created is to be used as
a working capital for this special pur
pose The premium matter is in keep
ing with a promise made by the Board
to reward the boys of the county who
join in the campaign for more coin
and better corn through the efforts of
the corn club
It has been some time since the
Board of Trade held a gpod live meet
ing and it is about time the work was
being started off again The work
was virtually suspended during the
holidays and during stocktaking time
since then but business people are
through with their first of the year
work now and will have time to give
to the public good
Hon W C Campbell has been in
dorsed by most of the county chair
men of this district as state execu
tive committee member from this dis
trict His appointment is almost sure
to follow and the selection will be a
food one
Thp farmers of this section should
find it very profitable to patronize the
local creamery The creamery uses
all the butter fat it can buy and the
experience of most people has been
that there is nWe profit in selling the
cream to tho creameries than in
making up the butter
Hon T N Jones the tall silent
man from Smith promises to come
again in a few days with another po
litical forecast that > will crruse many
confusions to fade away Intending
after Jones however it is a good idea
to keep in mind the fact that he is Tor
Joe Bailey first and all tho time
Gentlemen of the Board of Trade
lets go after that Fruit Palace idea
with a view to getting the show going
this snmmer It can be made a great
advertisement for Palestine and An
derson county and will be worth
niuch more than the cost That per
manent fruit and timber show room
is agood idea with an annual festi
val in connection Lets get right be
hind it and make it come through

LifeTime Men Jump From Moving
Train on State Road Near This
City Last Night
Last night while two cars of state
prisoners were being transferred from
the state prison at Rusk to a point in
South Texas and were being brought
to this city over the State Railroad to
make connection with the I G N
two life term men jumped from the
train while it was making some twen
ty or more miles per hour and made
their escape At least they had not
been recaptured up to the last reports
this morning The menwho escaped
are John Wilson and Peter Hall
negroes who were serving lifeterm
sentences It seems the men were
alLchained together with one general
connecting chain and then around the
neck in couples In some way the two
men who got away secured a file and
filed the big chain cutting themselves
loose from tho other prisoners but
still leaving them linked by the neck
one to the other When the train
was near Spring Park and going at a
good speed one of the men broke the
window next to him and crawled out
the other man following him They
hit the ground and since then nothing
has been seen or heaid of them Offi
cers with dogs went from this city
and tried to get on the trail but did
not succeed There were one hun
dred and two convicts on the train
with a limtied number of guards and
for this reason on bffort could be
made by those on the train to lecap
ture the men
Financial Agent Gus Barton of the
prisons was on the tialn and came
on to this city
