San Antor Doctor Believes Com
mander Peary Will Accept His
Offer and Prove Claims
h
Herald Special
San Antcfcio Texas March 8 Ds
Frederick Fielding is of the opin
ion that Commander Peary may yet
accept his offer to provide him with a
dirigible balloon for the purpose of
proving definitely that he has discov
ered the North Pole
I notice from press dispatches that
Peary has declined my offer but am
of the opinion that he may yet con
sider the matter said Dr Fielding
Asked whether he Intended to go to
the North Pole himself Dr Fielding
said that hewas not an explorer and
had no particular inclinations to en
ter that flejd
Going there by myself would prove
nothing hetsaid Whether the poles
aie discovered or not is not of the
slightest interest to me considered
per se The only thing I want to
do is of set vall minds at rest that the
pole is discovered Outside of that
the proposition does not interest me
in the least In my estimation the
knowledge gained by the discovery of
the pole is not of great value but the
knowledge that the North Pole has or
has not been discovered With me
it is alcase of keeping the record
straight thats all There Is no use
in burdening geographies and the
mind of future generations with a
statement that has jet no corrobora
tion And here I want to reiterate
that I do not doubt Mr Pearys rec
ords Still that does not prevent me
from taking the stand I am takin
What I would like to see done Is to
have the matter settled without the
slightest chance for future dispute I
think that a commission of scientists
appointed by the government in
which I would like to have at least
one foreigner possibly a man from
the Copenhagen University would set
tle the question definitely
