sion here today received a letter from
President Taft expressing the hope
that the editors will stand by the ad
ministration Senator Colium also
wrote a letter to the editors in which
ho piaised the administration includ
inp the new tariff bill and all that
has been done and admonished the
editors that the greatest danger to
the paity was caused by the attacks
from within the party Senator Col
luni also gave Cannon veiy warm
praise

Give Roads to That Hour to
Answer Are Standing Pat

Chicago March 15 After a con
feience today the trainmen announced
that they would give the railroads un
til 2 oclock to make radical conces
sions and that if the roads did not
comply that immediate arrangements
to put the strike into effect would be
made President Carter speaking
for the trainmen said that a telegram
to this effect had been sent to Chair
man Knapp and Labor Commissioner
Neil at Washington Carter said
emphatically that the trainmen would
not accept the plan suggested by the
managers to have Knapp and Neil act
as mediators as he regarded the move
mciely a plan to prolong the contro
ersy between the men and the roads
If the word strike is given twenty
seven thousand firemen and engineers
of fortynine western roads will be
effected also effecting one hundred
and fotty thousand miles of track
with a monthly pay roll of 160000
