Among the Speakers to Be Heard at
the Minnesota Conservation and
Development Congress

St Paul Minn March 16 The Au
ditorium was the scene today of the
assemblage of many distinguished fig
ures in the political industrial nnd
educational life of the nation It was
perhaps the most notable gathering
that has ever met in the northwest to
consider questions of great public im
portance The occasion was the open
ing of the first Minnesota Conserva
tion and Agricultural Development
Congress which convened in response
to a proclamation issued some time
ago by Governor Eberhart
Promptly at 10 oclock this morning
the congress was called to order by
Governor Eberhart and was opened
with an address by Archbishop Ire
land The opening addresses appoint
ment of the necessary committees and
other incidental business occupied the
remainder of the forenoon
At 2 oclock this afternoon the del
egates reassembled to discuss the sub
ject of State Conservation and De
velopment The program of the ses
sion provided for addresses as fol
lows Practical Conservation and
Agricultural Development in Minne

tions and Opportunities of the States

a brief visit to the Hamilton Club he
will return to the Hotel LaSalle for
the reception and banquet of the Irish
Fellowship Club
The arrangements for the banquet
have been made on an elaborate scale
The affair is to be held in three din
ing rooms so large has been the de
mand for seats but all guests will be
seated in the main hall when the ad

Indian affairs is prosecuting its health
campaign among the Indians with all
the vigor possible In fiiitherance of

conditions on a number of reserva
tions and in several Indian schools in
the West and Southwest with partic
ular attention to tuboiculosis and tra
choma The two diseases are scourges
among the Indians

door existence of civilization regard
less in a large measure of the necc3
sary requisities of ventilation and san
itation
The mortality among the Indians is
equivalent to twice that among the
white lace and tuberculosis forms 50

ing to the statistics which have been
so far collected by the Indian bureau
Trachoma is particularly pievalent
anions the Indians in the Southwest
In the Indian villages in the South
west from 11 to 54 per cent of the
Indnn children have this disease of
the ejes In Arizona 51 per cent and
in California 54 per cent were found
and inone village 71 per cent was
found It is said to be no uncommon
event to find a great many Indians
suffering from trachoma on the les
ervations
