two hundred musicians paraded the
downtown streets today as a prelimi
nary to the opening of the annual con
vention of the American Federation or
Musicians of the United States and
Canada The band headed the pro
cession of delegates which marched
to the Grand Opera House where tin
business sessions of the convention
are to continue through the greater
part of the week No questions of un
usual importance are to come up at
the convention this year though a
large amount of routine business re
lating to the affairs of the organize
tion is to be transacted

among them several well known busi
ness men of Cairo are to be placed
on trial this week for alleged partici
pation in the attack on the Alexander
county jail last FeDruary during
which one man in the mob was killed
and several injured by the sheriffs
special deputies A popular subscrip
tion has been raised to aid in the de
fense A fine of 500 and six months
imprisonment is possible in case3 of
