MAY 26 IN HISTORY
old days of personal liberty It does
not need an interpreter or elaborate
explanation to understand what the
San Antonio man had in mind In
fancy he must have seen the wide
open days returning when the sa
loons ran every hour in the twenty
four when Sunday was the same as
Monday for a saloon when gambling
went on in defiance of law or public
sentiment
It would not be fair or logical to
judge San Antonio people as a peo
ple by this orators words There are
as worthy as lawabiding people in
San Antonio as in Waco or any other
city of Texas and no doubt as many
in proportion And so far as we know
public sentiment in the Alamo City
stands for enforcement for respect of
law The type of man we have quoted
can be found in other towns and cities
of Texas in Waco for that matter
Furthermore we are loth to believe
that Mr Colquitt himself would wil
lingly pose as the ideal and the hope
of that type of citizenship
But theres the rub There can be
no doubt that Mr Colquitt whether
he desires to encourage such men or
not has done and is doing so They
are looking to his victory with the
same sort of pathetic faith that the
newly enfranchised freedman waited
for the forty acres and a mule years
ago According to this ilk the wide
open days the good old days of per
sonal liberty are to come again with
Colquitt in the governors chair It
is pathetic and it would be ludicrous
if it were not for the seriousness of
the thing It is warning to the peo
ple of Texas that wholesome and or
derly conditions a state of the public
mind that makes for respect of for
obedience to for fearless enforcement
of law may be menaced to say the

the element that hopes in the nomi

dispairs at the thought of Cone
Johnson being the next governor As
you say Mr Colquitt may not person
ally encourage the idea that he will
let the bars down and restore the
good old days of outlawry but the
support of his candidacy is based on
the blind faith that he will do this
very thing Personal liberty has been
cried up and down the state as Mr
Colquitts chief purpose in offering for
the governorship and to many the
term personal liberty means the broad
est kind of license On the other
hand people know that Cone Johnson
ispledged against these alleged good
old times that he will oppose all
measures of lawlessness and that he
will give the state a clean wise and
progressive administration As the
Herald sees it it would be a serious
mistake to elect Mr Colquitt as gov
ernor for the very reason that a hope
is being built on his success that
would threaten the peace of the state
WHAT JONES HASDONE
Silent Tom Jones of Tyler has been
hoard from again and he still refuses
to give his neighbor Cone Johnson
a good name But against the testi
mony of Jones several hundred good
people of Tyler including the pastors
of the churches the business and pro
fessional men the mechanics and the
fanners say Johnson is all that his
friends claim for him a good clean
man worthy to be made governor of
this great state Jones must feel
lonesome in such companv Palestine

between peaches and cream berries

most of us are unfortunate in that we
must make a choice or kill ourselves
That is really the only drawback to
