BURNED BY INFURATED CHER

FUL CRIME GIRL IS DEAD
At Lone Star in Cherokee county
last night about 1030 a negro man
named Leonard Johnson a county
convict working out a fine on the
place of a Mr Wm Redding
hung by an infuriated mob
riddled with bullets and afterwards
burned for one of the most revolting
crimes ever committed in the county
The victim was a seventeenyearold
white girl the daughter of the negros
employer Lone Star is a small vilj
lage about sixteen miles from Troupr
and the father and brother had gone1
to Rusk The girl passed the fieldI
where the negro was plowing on her
way to take her accustomed music les j
son and he followed her When tfief
girl did not come home her absence
was reported to the father and son
about 5 p m and a search revealed
the body in a clump of bushes cold
in death with the throat cut from
ear to ear ahd the body otherwise
lacerated and bruised The negro
was suspicioned and arrested and the
evidence found was sufficient to war
rant the mob in reaching the conclu
sion that the right man was arrestedr
though he stoutly maintained his in
nocence
The mob declare there was made nd
mistake in the negro guilty of thej
crime In the neighborhood it is re
ported other negroes who were dis
posed to protect the prisoner were
beaten and otherwise hars

Rusk Texas June 20 A telephone
message was received at 1145 this
evening from the Lone Star comma
nity fifteen miles northeast of here
stating that Sheriff Norwood and his
deputies had arrested Leonard John
son the negro who assaulted and
killed Miss Redden and while en
route to jail a crowd of 150 citizens
surrounded and overpowered the sher
iff and his ten deputies and toolc
from them the negroJohnson then
the crowd took Johnson a short dis
tance away and gave him an oppor
tunity to talk that he confessed his
guilt after which he was tied to a
stake and burned to death No fur
ther details of the affair can be se
cured tonight

in the trial of Lee ONeil Browne
rested its case at noon today without
railing Lorimer Lieutenant Gover
nor Ogiesby was on the stand this
morning Oglesbys appearance today
led to the belief that the defense will
try to show the whole thing was a
political plot Frederick Bentner a
traveling salesman testified that
White told him lie was going on a
trip and that he expected to get 1500
for it The case will probably go to
the jury tomorrow

air night auto ride The woman had
1500 concealed in her clothes Both
refuse to talk Johnson disappeared
from his hotel yesterday and the
police were searching for the body
which was discovered by truckmen
who noticed blood seeping through
the trunk onto the depot platform
The police opened the trunk which
was found much too small to hold the
body The body was horribly multi
lated The room at the hotel was dis
ordered and bloody and there was
evidence of a bloody struggle Sus
picion was directed to Webb when it
jWas learned that he occupied a room
across the hall from Johnsons He
admitted he knew Johnson and said
the last time he saw him alive was at
the union depot The Johnson woman
