All the afternoon
since leaving Ba
sel be had been
tbe sole occupant
of a compart
ment first class
and he was alto
gether too young
and too inter
ested In humani
ty to enjoy the
exclusiveness of the railway Journey
So he took a book from his bag and
tried to become interested in It A
single paragraph convinced him that
he had chosen a form of distraction
which was destined to prove unsatis
factory The passage ran as follows
There are moments in the lives
even of those who are In apparent con
trol of their mental and normal proc
esses during which the most Inconceiv
able vagaries come into being and the
most unaccountable acts are perform
ed All this occurs too without any
absolute surrender of personal integ
rity on the part of the subject so in

back at him for the first time

of a very shapely hand

July She enlisted the efforts on pa

but the American eagle still screams
and the firecracker continues to crack

noiseless Fourth are they
These Luther Burbanks qf pa
triotism are going after the glo
rious old day as Luther went after the
cactus to scrape the spines off and
leave it a soft velvety affair Make
tbe Fourth just a dream day for Bio
tas and somnoleuce dedicated to the
great white god Silence
Very well Let them do it After
about one or a fraction of one suet
silent Fourth theyll be glad to ge
back to the pop proposition I know
beloved because I once experienced an
absolutely silent Fourth of July
My noiseless Fourth took place some
where near the middle of the Npvadu
desert You can find places iu that
desert today where there Isnt a sound
for hundreds of miles because theres
nothing to make a sound I was berd
j lng cattle in those days bunching
cows the elegant eastern writers call
Callente was my headquarters
1 Ever see Callente I mean rather
did you ever feel Callente There Isnt
much to see but In midsummer you
can feel Callente It feels just as its
Spanish name implies hot Callente
is surrounded by barren mountains
beyond which stretches barren desert
Nowadays there Is a raiin ad that
finds entrance and exit between the
passes but in those days the louesome
little burg was an Isolated speck
Strange fo say tbe townhad run out
of ammunition by the end of June
Though every man carried a six shoot
er there wasnt a cartridge left in Cal
lentp And as for other fireworks ma
terial there wasnt a cracker except
whip crackers
Callente couldnt stand for a fire
workless Fourth so I was detailed to
ride horseback eighty miles across the
shimmering dpsert and bring back
from tbe nearest railroad town a sup
ply of noise producers My horse had 1
a lame hoof so the boss proffered his

I set out on the first day of July lj
calculated being from New England
I can calculate you see that I could
get the fireworks and reach Callentein
time for tbe celebration to begin about
noon of the Fourth I made the rail
road town all right strapped big bun
dles of pyrotechnics to the horse nnd
got back within thirty miles of Call
ente by the evening of the third I
was dog tired So was the horse prob
ably But I determined to rest only an
hour eat a bite and plug along a few
hours before making camp so that 1
i could get into Callente a little earlier
than I was expected
Dismounting I hitched the horse to
a cactus bush and sat down to unlace
my shoes I proposed easing my Own
feet before easing the animal by un
saddling him I went sound asleep
j with one shoe off and one on An hour
later I awoke The horse was gone
j He bad pulled the top off the brittle
cactus bush and released himself He
carried with him Callentes entire
stock of fireworks also my six shooter
slung over the saddle in Its holster
I slept soundly until daybreak on the
sandy ground Arising at dawn on tbe
j Fourth of July I set out at a brisk
j pace for Callente as I thought It
j was a sultry day and the heat In
I creased as the hours advanced By

I was tired awfully tired 1 was
footsore I was hungry I was thirsty
I was hot fiercely hot But 1 want
to confess right here and now that
none of these disagreeable things
caused me half such agony as that
dreadful dumb desolate universal Si
lence with a big S I tried to about
but my dry tongue gave forth no
sound Clutching wildly at a grease
wood bush I fell to tbe baked soil and
lost knowledge of life

cue party that set out as soon as the
boss riderless horse got in After a
big swig at the water bottle I faintly

his gun He did so and the sound was
