Poughkeepsie N Y July 11 The
Midnight Express on the New York
Central railroad was wrecked at an
early hour this morning near here
The locomotive pulling the fast ex
press struck an iron bound car door
that dropped from a freight train
and left the track Engineer Fendell
jumped and received injuries from
which he died shortly afterward
Fireman Holmes was fatally scalded
and Baggageman Ray was found dead
in his car Despite the fact that the
wreck delayed the train on which
Jack Johnson was a passenger some
three hours sixteen thousand negroes
welcomed the prize fghter at the
station The police refused the ne
groes a permit to use a band or a
parade in welcome of Johnson Also
all speechmaking was prohibited
Johnson will begin an engagement in
vaudeville this week at 3000 per
week

panies controlling the pictures of the
day that the pictures would be ex
hibited only from the stages of the
atres from which children had been
barred It is further announced that
women may attend if they so desire
but they will first be warned that the
pictures are on the program Eleven
films were reeled off yesterday be

tures and were declared to be the
best pictures every reproduced of a

vestigation before the senate judiciary

Fort Worthy Texas July 10 A
freight train was wrecked on the
Texas Pacific railway near East
land 105 miles west of here at G
oclock this evening O Goodyear a
brakeman was killed and 0 S Greer
another brakeman was slightly in
jured Both resided in Fort Worth
A brief report of the wreck was rt
ceived here by railway officials and
the wrecking train was dispatched to appears to have been largely confined
the scene of the accident to previously infested districts

Columbus Ohio July 11 Mayor
Atherton of Newark will be suspended
from office today by Governor Har
monNas a result of the lynching of
Carl Etherington the dry detective
who was taken from jail and lynched
by a mob The governor spent Sun
day in Newark and is said to be con
vinced that the lynching could have
been prevented if the mayor and Sher
iff Linke had done their duty
Governor Harmon announced at
noon that he had decided to suspend
Mayor Atherton of Newark on the
grounds of gross negligence of duty
Charges of a like character will also
be preferred against Sheriff Linke

hundred and twentyfive passengers
of the steamer Cape Girardeau were
rescued late Sunday when the steam
er sank in the Mississippi river near
St Joe The reports are that the
steamer ran into a sunken govern
ment barge unmarked by lights The
pasgengsrs were removed in small
ing The steamer was heavily loaded

Loeb in Beverly talking politics with
President Taft and Colonel Roosevelt
entertaining Governor Hughes at
Oyster Bay the political pot may be
said to be boiling in this state Loeb
is expected to tell Taft of the signifi
cance of Roosevelts recent activities
and it is believed he may carry a mes
sage from the president vto Roosevelt
It is also expected that Roosevelt and
Hughes will form an alliance for po
litical purposes

for governor of New York Following
a conference with President Taft to
day it is learned from an authorita
tive source that Taft urged Loeb to
announce his candidacy with the as
surance that the administrative sup
port will be forthcoming Both Loeb
and the president decline to discuss
the meeting but it Is believed Loeb
will make the race

Shows Favorable Progress In Texas
and Oklahoma
New Orleans La July 10 The
TimesDemocrat will tomorrow pub
lish the following summary based on
reports of its special correspondents
concerning the cotton crop of 1910
The reports indicate favorable spro
gress in the states of Oklahoma and
Texas and distinct deterioration
throughout the remainder of the belt
In the wes the fields arc as a rule
clean and well worked A general
rain would prove beneficial
East of the Mississippi river and
in the states of Louisiana and Arkan
sas continuous and excessive rainfall
has multiplied the farmers difficul
ties resulting In deterioration over
large areis and greatly increasing the
importance of seasonable weather
henceforth and of the late frost
There has been some abandonment
of cottonacreage but Insect activity
