house of representatives will not ap
pear on the chautauqua platform this
summer despite an offer of 200 a

time to speaking in behalf of the dem

The progressive faction is assured
of control of the republican state con
vention in Iowa next month The con
vention will have an added interest
because Senator Cummins the insur
gent leader is going to preside as
temporary chairman and will deliver
the keynote address
Governor Glasscock of West Vir
ginia intends to use his influence with
the next legislature of his state to
secure the enactment if possible of
a primary election law a county local
option law a law creating a public
service commission and a law pro
viding for a production tax on natural
gas
The death of Senator Daniel will
make it necessary for the next ses
sion of the Virginia legislature to
elect two United States senators
Senator Martins term will expire in
1913 The 1912 legislature will also
choose his successor It is generally
predicted however that he will suc
ceed himself and that any fight for a
seat in the upper house will center
around that occupied by Mr Daniel
