Norfolk Va July 21 Ten mem
bers of the coast artillery corps were
killed today and two others probably
fatally injured and Lieutenant Van
Dursen suffered a broken leg and
three others were slightly injured by
the premature explosion of a twelve
inch gun during a battle practice at
Fortress Monroe Lieutenant Van
Dursen is said to be the only com
missioned officer injured The men
practicing had just finished a course
in the artillery school General W
II Carter was present at the time of
the explosion and reported to the
war department that a score of high
ranking officers were at the fort at
the time Among the number were
General Bailey assistant chief of the
coast artillery but he was not near
the scene of the explosion The ac
cident was similar to a number that
have occurred during practice
work It is thought the pin was not
drawn when the breech lock was
shoved into the gun leaving it in
