THE TEXAS TARIFF DOCTRINE
There is abundant evidence of a
purpose to resist the reaffirmation
ofthe Texas tariff doctrines A fac
tion of the party harking back to
another political contest and nursing
the personal and factionalv hatreds of
a former defeat will seek to make
discord and dissension in the hope of
annoying or embarrassing Senator
Bailey But there is even more
abundant evidence that the effort
will fall Perhaps by the timo the
disgruntled ones reach Galveston
they will conclude that discretion is
the better partof valor If not there
will be no doubt a little dramatic
demonstration a dull thud and a

At the Lyric Theatre on Main Street

Everybody should get in line and
help to make Labor Day a big holi
day It is about the only day in the
year when everybody goes picnicing
Dont send your money away from
home When sent away it does not
come back Beside there are just as
good bargains at home as are to be
found in Chicago and other mail
order centers
The state democratic convention
meets tomorrow and it is predicted
there will be a hot time We will no
doubt have an opportunity of seeing
how the policy of political rest and
peace is to be inaugurated
The second and last democratic pri
mary of the year will be held next
Saturday when the candidates will
still be reduced to one in a hill
Those making the second race are ex
ceedingly anxious that a full vote be
cast
The government census of Hous
ton shows the city to be about twen
t thousand short in population of
what the school census indicated and
about fifty thousand short of what
Houston wanted it to show Still we
all get these call downs now and
then
The Herald is anxious to give the
particulars ofan organization of Pal
estine men who will promote our first
big colonization scheme Such a plan
will be the beginning of the immigra
tion movement in this county in dead
earnest Anderson county offers a
most inviting field for people who
want to build a home in an ideal
place where the climate and soil are
all that can be desired
The democratic party has always
stood opposed to a protective tariff
but if signs are not deceiving a
bunch of the modern democrats
who go to Galveston to the state con
vention will be found asking the
party of the state to stand for a deal
whereby Texas and the south can get
some of the tariff loot And these
are the same fellows who always re
fer us to the democracy of the fath
ers
Here is a grim joke Some ten or
fifteen mentrode out of Palestine this
morning in a private car labeled An
derson County for Bailey and Colquitt
and Old Time Democracy Of course
such a big delegation riding in this
car from old Anderson will carry
conviction in spite of the fact that
the county convention refused to in
dorse Bailey or to give Colquitt a ma
jority in the primaries But some
people will have their joke at any
qost
Pretty soon cotton will begin to roll
in and then business will move
ahead with renewed energy Pales
tine has enjoyed a good business
right through the summer but with
the coming of fall it will move ahead
It is time right now to make a cam
paign for an extended trade territory
With the stocks and husiness con
cerns here Palestine should have a
trade territory extending over four or
five counties and it can be had by
making the proper effort
Since it is the peoples business
they have a right to ask ail the ques
tions necessary to arrive at a thor
ough understanding of the park and
fire equipment bond issue These
questions should be asked frankly and
answered in the same way The Hei
ald hope s a full and complete discus
sion of the issue will be had that nc
one will have cause to be misled 01
vote imadvisedly As the Herald has
stated before it is not interested in
the political side of this matter if
indeed it has a political side we are
interested in seeing the city get the
parks that it is entitled to

FOR LABOR AY QUEEN
S J
II DELIGHTFUL PLACF
Fergusons Club House and Cedar
Lake Make Ideal Fishermans
Combination
To have at ones d sposal a comfort
able house nice clean beds and
three rooms comfortably furnished as
bedrooms kitchen dining room and
sitting room is not half bad in fact
it is very comfortable But add to
this one of the prettiest lakes in all
this section and a pretty woodland
the lake full of game fish and the
woods full of lifegiving ozone and
free of troublesome insects and it is
certainly ideal Such is J H Fer
guson > club house located on Cedar
Lake
A Herald man spent three days at
this place accompanied by hisfamily
and every minute of the time was
pleasantly spent The house is really
a much more comfortable one than
many socalled modern homes The
floors are clean the beds are com
fortable and everything for enjoy
ment and comfort is at hand that
most people have at home A good
well of water is near the cottage a
stable is handy for the team Doors
and windows of the house are airwell
screened so there is freedom from
flies and rao squitoes On yMsi = the
surprises though was the absence of
mosquitoes There are not near so
many on the lake as are to be found
in Palestine And the fishing is good
In Cedar Lake you have a stretch of
about two miles of as pretty fishing
water as you ever saw while just a
milefurther on is Big Lake another
of the countys most noted fishing
places
Mr Ferguson will rent his house by
the day to couples or families of right
character and the money spent here
in an outing is money well invested
And too the road leading to this
place is among the best in the county
making the going easy
