Sulphur Okla Aug 12 For the
first time since fhe investigation into
the Gore charges started in Oklahoma
the fa r sex was represented by the
presence of a number of wealthy wo
men In the crowd present at the
Tiearing today were women Indians
congressmen and other spectators
George Scott soninlaw of Chief
Green McCurtain was the first wit
ness called this morning He denied
that McMurray was to pay himfor his
services in behalf of having theMfi
Murray contracts approved saying
that he was interested only In a gen
eral way in seeing the Indian affairs
settled He made this declaration In
the face of the fact that it was shown
that he had given up his position as
McCurtains secretary at a salary of
1800 Scott said he was not reim
bursed for the payment of telegrams
sent to Washington or for his trip
there in the Interest of the contracts
The evidence this morning tended
to show the simplicity of the Indians
When Scott was on the stand it was
shown that the Indians were willing
to sign away their rights to millions
of dollars where they would be un
willing to sign tax contracts because
the latter calls for the immediate
payment of 10
PUSHING LIQUOR BILLS
Lower Legislative House Losing No
Time Along This Line
Austin Texas Aug 11 At this
afternoons session of the house Justo
Penn was sworn in as a member from
Webb county as the successor to C
C Pearce deceased
Discussion was then resumed on
the express liquor bill The main
contention was over an amendment
exempting an express agent from lia
bility unless he knowingly violated
the act A roll call on the amend
ment revealed the fact that no quo
rum was present and a call of the
house was ordered
The committee on liquor traffic met
this afternoon and reported favorably
the antitreating bill and other liquor
bills introduced at the morning ses
sion
Speaker Marshall announced this
afternoon that he had advices from
Senator Bailey to the effect that he
would not be here tomorrow evening
to address the legislature
Shortly after 3 oclock a quorum
was secured and the proposed amend
ment was defeated Several other
amendments were proposed by the
antis for the evident purpose of de
stroying its effectiveness All were
voted down and the bill was passed
finally
Fort Davis For Sale
San Antonio Texas Aug 11 Fort
Davis at one time the only protec
tion against Indians and bandits on
the El PasoSan Antonio road Is be
ing offered for sale by the govern
ment Though the old fort is one of
the landmarks of West Texas and
many a fine tale of romance heroism
and narrow escape is pinned to it It
will now pass out of existence

Estrada left today for Granada and

dent Madriz has a boat commissioned
in which to make his escape in case

cians of St Marys Hospital Issued
the following bulletin this morning
Mayor Gaynor passed a good night
and is sleeping this morning His gen
eral condition is excellent Tempera
ture shows 100 pulse 70 and respira
tion 16
Arrangements have been made to
have an operating surgeon in constant
attendance on account of the appre
hension that the bullet wound may
show signs of infection Several of
the doctors maintain that Xray pho
tographs in such a case do not indi
cate the exact lateral position and
that it would be unsafe to attempt an
operation Another general consulta
tion will be held by the physicians to
night Gaynor ate a hearty breakfast
this morning
A later bulletin says The mayor
has passed a comfortable morning and
has taken nourishment well He is
steadily improving The mayor went
to sleep at 10 oclock and was still
asleep at 130 Young Gaynor son
of the mayor said this afternoon that
the doctors had assuerd him that
unless infection set in which was not
apprehended his father would surely
recover

Nelson Aldrich aboard his private
yacht slipped into Beverly early to
day and interrupted the president
while he was at breakfast They talk
ed over the political situation for
some thirty minutes when Aldrich
slipped back to his boat evading the
newspaper men who had learned of
his presence His boat at once pulled
out of the harbor The president has
arranged to see Secretary of the
Treasury McVeagh and Postmaster
General Hitchcock today

flight over the city by Hubert La
tham In an Antionette monoplane
He flew from Chalons sur Saone to
