Last night Sheriff Lacy and depu
ties of Houston county were here to
secure the eight white men held on
indictments here in connection with
> the negro killings in the southern part
of the county and they were carried
to Crockett via the night train These
J men will be subject to an examining
trial at Crockett today before a jus
tice of the peace for the killing of a
negro in Houston county The negro
C was killed about the time the negroes
were killed in this county being a
f victim of the trouble down there The
scene of the Houston county killing is
jus tvacross the county line near the
place where the other negroes were
killed

senator in the democratic primary
election to be held in the Thirteenth
senatorial district on the 8th day of
October 1910 as called by the demo
cratic executive committee of said dis
trict The undersigned committee was
appointed by a mass meeting of pro
hibition democrats held at Palestine
Texas on August 15th We believe
that it is a matter of the highest im
portance that a prohibition democrat
be selected for this place In the
next legislature the senate will con
tain barely twothirds prohibitionists

Centenary Methodist Church Crowded
Last Night With Audience
For Song Servile
Again last night the Centenary
Methodist church was crowded with a
splendid audience to hear and enjoy
the song service The program as
published in Saturdays Herald was
beautifully rendered with the excep
tion of one number and an extra was
substituted for this one The large
audience enjoyed the music and songs
to the fullest and no doubt the mu
sical programs will be continued dur
ing the remainder of the summer
months

of this week the important business
of the meeting being the election of
a new executive committee which in
turn will elect a new president and
other offfcers This if course Is im
portant as the Board needs a strong
set of officers to continue the impor
tant work that has been undertaken in
the past and which must be contin
ued Every man in Palestine inter
ested in the future of the town should
be at this meeting and become a
member of the Board and a helper in
the public work of the town

Ions delegates and visitors have been
arriving in large numbers to partici
pate in the eleventh annual national
convention of the Fraternal Order of
Eagles which wTll begin its business
sessions tomorrow morning in this
city At the convention headquarters
it is estimated that twenty thousand
members and visitors are already on
hand while large additions are ex
pected during the late hours tonight
and early tomorrow morning
The public buildings hotels and
business houses are lavishly decorated
with bunting and fluttering signs of
welcome for the visitors The pro
gram of entertainment has been map
ped out on an elaborate scale and
nothing is to be left undone that will
contribute to the pleasure of the
Eagles their families and friends
during their stay in the city
During the day the various officers
and committees have been hard at
work completing their reports and put
ting the finishing touches to the con
vention arrangements Frank E
Hering of Indana grand worthy presi
dent of the order will call the gather
ing to order and respond to the wel
coming addresses Air Hering will be
succeeded in the presidency this year
by Thomas F Grady the well known
lawyer and politician of New York
The annual reports of the officers
will show the Eagles to be in a most
flourishing condition both numerical
ly and financially There are now
nearly two thousand subordinate
aeries in the United States and Can
ada and the total membership ex
ceeds 300000 During the past ten
years the subordinate bodies have in
vested G000000 in fraternal temples
and club rooms Six million dollars
have been disbursed to members as
sick benefits during the period and
over 1000000 has been paid in
funeral benefits
