FEDERAL JUDGE LANDIS TODAY
ISSUED MITTIMUSSES FOR AR
REST OF TEN LEADING PACK
ERS OF THE COUNTRY

Chicago 111 Sept 13 Federal
Judge Landis today issued mittimusses
for the arrest of ten of the leading
packers of the country being the
heads of the companies which are or
ganized under the National Packing
company with the alleged purpose of
controlling the prices of meats The
men are confronted with possible jail
sentences The indictments were re
turned late yesterday The service oft
warrants will not it is believed be
necessary as the packers will appear
in court today The bail will probably
be fixed at ten thousand dollars each
Attorneys John Smiler and Levy
Mayer representing the packers ap
peared in court today and asked Judge
Landis to fix the bonds but not to
serve the warrants for arrest on the
indicted packers The court fixed
the bonds at one thousand dollars in
each indictment making thirty thou
sand dollars for each defendant Th e
attorneys agreed to this arrangement

Zionsville Man Victim of an Attempt

gust Look came very near being a
sassinated Sunday night at 9 oclock at
his home near Zionsville Some uii
known person fired a load of buckshot1
through the window but fortunately
the load of shot hit his chair and was
partly deflected but four buckshot
struck Mr Look in the neck His
wife who was sitting nearby received
one bullet in her thigh Mr Look was
carried to Galveston to a hospital to
have the shot removed There is ilo
clue as to who perpetrated the deed

Phoenix Ariz Sept 13 The in
itiative and referendum will be writ
ten in the Arizona constitution This
was assured today by the victory at
the polls of the democratic candidates
for delegates to the constitutional con
vention It is practically certain that
twentynine out of the fiftytwo dele
gates are democrats and are pledged
to the initiative plank The democrats
assert that todays victory is Ari
zonas answer to the attempted dicta
tion from Washington for a safe and
sane constitution
Withholds Permits
Austin Texas Sept 12 The con
troller has not yet issued liquor per
mits to persons desiring them in
Amarillo and may not do so While
Amarillo went wet in a local option
election held some time ago the con
troller is investigating to determine
vhether or not permits shall tie is
sued H H Cooper representing cer
tain applicants for permits was here
today and was informed that he might
get a decision tomorrow It seems
that the controller is looking into the
Amarillo situation to see just what it
is before he acts upon the permits
He foresees a possible contest as to
the outcome of the recent election in
which the antis carried Amarillo and
is probably waiting to see what this
wnl develop He is also looking into
the local option election held at Ama
rillo two years ago won by the pros
and contested by the antis

Washington Sept 12 Washingtons
annual census of public shade trees
3hows the total number to be 97954
During the jear 4030 new trees were
planted and 2152 standing trees were
removed because of disease or build
ing operations leaving the years net
gain 1879 The cost of planting new
teres and keeping in firstclass condi
tion this forest of nearly 100000 trees
along the streets and in the parks was
U0G1 There were nine convictions
for damaging or removing trees one
man being fined 75 for removing a
tree on the curb line without sanction
of the park board Of the 1030 new
trees planted 1700 were Norway
maple 700 elms 59G oak and 570 syca
more The annual Washington tree
census has come to be one of the in
teresting yearly contributions to the
literature of civic improvement in this
country

The results in Maine were a decided
shock and little effort has been
made to conceal this fact The result
is a double sting to the president as
the republican leaders had predicted

today in the recall of R O Marsh sec
retary of the American legation and

Dawson minister to Panama will pro
ceed from Washington tomorrow to
assume charge of the situation
