Engineers Trainmen and Conductors
In West Want Wage Increase
Chicago 111 Sept 21 Seventyfive
thousand locomotive engineers train
men and conductors on all the sjs
tems in the west are preparing to
open negotiations with the railroad
managers for wage increase of ap
proximately 15 per cent The en
neers gave notice o their demand
some time ago and their general com
mittee will arrive here next Monday
to meet the general managers in con
ference The trainmen and con
ductors are now taking a referendum
vote before presenting their demands
to the management The vote will be
completed October 1 when the ques
tion will at once be submitted to the
managers It is expected that thirty
days may elapse before trainmen and
conductors ask for a conference
The demands cover every railroad
system west of and including the
main line of the Illinois Central The
Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen
and the Order of Railway Conductors
are acting jointly in the wage move
ment while the engineers are a ctlng
i alone About 25000 engineers are in
volved and over 50000 trainmen and
conductors The firemen on the
same railroads presented demands
last spring which were settled by ar
bitration underthe Erdman law giv
ing the men an increase of about 10
per cent in wages

broke outi in the business center of
New Iberia at 1230 oclock Thursday
morning and at this hour it is beyond
control and is sweeping everything be
foie it The fire is being driven by
a strong gale of wind and is leaping
ft om building to building with light
ninglike rapidity The property de
stroyed up to this hour aggiegates
half a million dollars
An entire block on Main stieet in
the heart of the business section is
enveloped in flames and apparently
doomed There was every indication
that the flames would spread and de
stioy much more valuable property

sworn in by Mayor Powers to pre
sent depredations and to safeguard
