miles north of here late this after

to obtain and although some of the
statements received from there make

The collision occurred between lo
cal train No 14 north bound and an
excursion train No 73 headed to
ward St Louis and loaded with pas
sengers on their way to view the pa
rade of the Veiled Prophets at St
Louis The accident according to
the present information was due to
disregard of orders by the crew of
local No 14 which was in charge of
M A Leonard conductor and John
Tierman ofStaunton motorman
Train Na 14 had orders to pass
train No 73 Staunton The latter
train was running in two sections and
the orders given to No 14 were ex
plicit that It should pass both sec
tions of the north bound train at
Staunton
The first section of No 73 had
passed when the crew of No 14 pulled
out on the main track and started
north At a sharp turn in the road
called Dickersons curve which is
two miles north of this place the two
trains came together In a splintering
crash

Riser and driven by Bercher Whaley
was returning to the city from the
county fair grounds this afternoon Jt
was struck by an east bound Katy
passenger train and smashed to
pieces The car was full of passen
gers when struck by the train and
the fact that none was killed or se
riously Injured is almost a miracle
With the exception of a mashed hand
sustained by Driver Whaley when the
train came to a stop all the occu
pants of the car were found to be un
injured

Staunton 111 Oct 5 In a signed
statement today H F Chubbuck vice
president and general manager of
the Illinois Traction system holds
John Tierman the motorman of the
north bound car fully responsible for
the collision late yesterday between
two interurban trains one mile north
of here in which thirtysix people lost
their lives Following the collision
Tierman fled to Staunton and with
drew his savings from a deposit vault
and left town He was arrested this
morning at Carlonville where the
dead are assembled Tierman disre
garded his orders to wait for the pass
ing of two sections of the south bound
limited After the first section passed
Herman proceeded northward and
collided with the second section at
the foo t of a curve in a ravine
