Atlantic City Oct 15 Walter Well
man the well known balloonist and
Melvin Vaniman a noted engineer
with a crew of six men in the big
dirigible balloon America started
shortly after 8 oclock this morning in
an attempt to cross the Atlantic
ocean
Preparations have been under way
for some time for this voyage and
great interest is being taken in the
trip by balloonists and aviators all
over the country
After getting fairly under way a
heavy wind carried the balloon sea
ward and Wellman signaled that the
European voyage had started The
balloon finally disappeared in a fog
At 1105 the first wireless message
from the dirigible America was re
ceived here It read Headed north
east all well on board Machinery
working fine Goodbye Signed J
Irwin
Wellman carried a wireless instru
ment and operator among his other
equipment
A wireless message from Wellman
and his crew to John W Salus presi
dent of the syndicate who financed
the project was received this after
noon at 1 oclock saying All did

Salus answered saying Great

the century plaudits from every one
Our best wishes and God speed to
yourself and Vaniman Am with your
family and will stay with them until
you reach Europe Please continue
to flash
Mrs Wellman and her two daugh
ters remain at the wireless station on
the million dollar pier receiving all
flashes The doors of the station are
locked against the throng who are
trying to hear from the balloon From
the messages received it is evident
every vessel carrying wireless at sea
and within a radius of two hundred
miles of the balloon have picked up
the flashes from the dirigible Cap
tains of the craft which have run out
of the zone are bombarding the local
station for news
Messages from the balloon at 12
oclock said it was still going sea
ward At one time it was made nec
essary to stop the motors ih order to
get1 the wireless going but later it
was announced that both were work
