Punishment the Keynote In
Modern School Methods
Mrs Ella F Young Superintendent
of the Chicago Schools and President
of the National Educational Associa
tion says that the development of the
child physically morally and mentally
is best secured by developing the good
in him and not by punishment cor
poral or otherwise
Years ago the backward child the
one who seemed stupid and restless
and unable to learn received a dose
of the rod Today far better results
are obtained by giving the child fresh
air sunlight and a small amount of
nutritious fooddrink The proof of
this is shown in the results obtained
in various schools where teachers
who have tried the above methods
prove by figures that backward chil
dren show an increase in weight less
ened abscenes from illhealth and a
far superior mental tone and bright
ness
The Principal of a Boston School
has said It is the opinion of all the
teachers that Horlicks Malted Milk
a hot cupful of which is given during
the middle of each session lias been
very beneficial to the children It
has heartened them and we notice a
tlecided change for the better An
other Principal found the average gain
n weight of thirty two backward chll
dren landed from three to eleven
pounds in three months by the use
of a hot cupful of Horlicks and the
fresh air tieatment Such results as
these are gratifying to every lover of
children

BY REV JAMES KILGORE
Pastor Centepary Methodist Church
Man is a physical social and spir
itual being In order that he may
keep his physical being healthy and
vigorous it is necessary for him to
Keep in constant touch with the physi
cal world Eating and exercise are
a necessity for physical wellbeing
The social side of ones nature can be
developed oply as one comes into
contact with others and has social
Intercourse with them To become
really spiritual one needs to come
into touch with spirituallyminded peo
ple and to learn to know God as the
Great Spirit the Father of our spir
its The only institution that pio
poses spiritual communion and spirit
ual development is the church Jesus
Christ promised that the gates of
Haedes should not prevail against
His church and He also promised
that where people are assembled in
His name He would be in their midst
It is therefore essential that we at
tend church and join in the public
worship if we desire to hope to at
tain that spiritual unfolding which
will give spiritual strength and joy
here and eternal life in the world to
come
