Washington D C Nov 1 Offi
cial Washington is considerably inter
ested in the results of todays elec
tion in Cuba the first to he held
under the administration of President
Gomez and the second to be held by
a Cuban government without the in
fluence of American control In addi
tion to half the members of the lower
house of the national legislature mu
nicipal officers in all cities and towns
are to be elected
The victory of one or another of
the numerous political parties which
have tickets in the field is not looked
upon here as of so much importance
as the effect that the election may
have upon the future tranquillity of
the country When the campaign
opened last summer there existed a
general feeling of despondency in re
gard to the prospect of a peaceful
election and this feeling was intensi
fied as the campaign progressed by
the continuation of the schism be
tween the Miguelists and Zayista fac
tions of the Liberal party and the
frequencywith which the political
meetings broke up amid fierce fight
ing Recently however reports from
the island Indicated a subsidence of
excitement and apparently a disposi
tion of the warring factions to get to

is no doubt according to advices re
ceived here that President Gomez has
been putting forth every effort to
prevent fraud and disorder The sit
uation however is complicated by
the large number of political parties
which has led to bitter factional ani
mosities In Havana alone there are
no less than five parties in the field
In addition to the Miguelistas and the
Zayistas there is a negro party a
lahor party and an independent lib
eral party Then there are the Young
Cubans modeled so the leaders say
on the young Turkey party and still
another faction which might be term

moral of which was prove it Cer

water of equal weight are balanced on
the beams of a balance scale and a
frog is then put in one of the vessels
the balance remains the same thus
attempting to prove the assertion
that a frog has no weight when im
mersed in water Each wise man had
his own explanation and there was
much heated argument fand discus
