For Entombed Miners In the Lawson
Mine at Black Diamond
Seattle Wash Nov 7 Though
little hope is held out for the safety
of any of the fifteen men who were j
caught by yestei days terrific gas ex
plosion in the Lawson coal mine at
Black Diamond rescuers are working
heroically to leach the entombed min
eis At midnight they had reached
the first level at a depth of 350 feet
The work is extremely hazardous
owing to crumbling walls It is
thought to be hardly possible that
five of the men who were in a car
below the sixth level may have es
caped death
If the explosion occurred above the j
level it is believed that the acr was
shut off by a slide of earth and that
the five men may be imprisoned 2200 f
feet below the surface I
The explosion completely wrecked
the woikings of the mine causing the
walls to cave in and hurling heavyi
timuors and steel supports out of the
mouth or the shaft with such velocity
that they weie shot half a milp across
the country The cause of the explo
sion has not been ascertained
