Rev R li Gillon and his excellent
family left their work here Wednes
day for their new field in East Texas
Bro Gillon has accepted the pastorate
of the First Baptist church in Pales
tine a church of 700 members This
is a fine field in one of the best towns
in East Texas Palestine is a rail
road town a division point of the
International and Great Northern rail
road with a pay roll of 100000 The
town has a population of some 12000
or 15000 souls dominated by as good
blood as Texas affords It is the
home of the late John H Iteagan
Governor Campbell makes that city
his home too Other prominent citi
zens of Texas renown could be men
tioned in connection with the town
The famous William Penn built the
Nickel church the house in which
Bro Gillon will preach
Pastor Gillon and his good wife did
a great work in Plainview during the
sixteen months they were among us
When they came on the field the
church had no baptistry While they
were here a baptistry was put in and
something like one hundred persons
baptized in fact Bro Gillon bap
tized more people than any other
preacher on the plains during his stay
here has been truthfully said by
President I E Gates During these
brief months about 250 members
were added to the church Really the
church came into her own to the de
light of the saints during the first
twelve months of this mans pastor
ate as was never known before It
was a glorious work The Sunday
school was garded and marvelous
has been the progress A B Y P V
was organized which at one time
was one of the best organizations of
Its kind In this part of the state The
ladies Aid Society did the banner
work of Its history under the admin
istration of Brother Gillon In brief
great strides of progress have been in
evidence along all lines The church
has given to benevolent work as
never before It has been a pleasure
to the writer to observe the develop
ment In this particular Th college
west of town was changed from a
mere hole in the ground to a magnifi
cent building nearly completed The
pastor had a large part in this under
taking too to the delight of Plaint
view

This man of God that he is has
touched scores and scores of us and
caufeed us to get a new hold on life
and God Many of us through his
Christly influence his manly walk
his timely suggestions his noble life
dominated by the spirit of all grace
has caused many men and women
boys and girls in Plainview and sur

noble man leave this section but a
life dominated and guided by the

would hinder at a time like this
would run a risk of hindering the
progress of the kingdom and might
delay the second coming of the Lord

they take up work in their new field

criminal cases in Indiana in recent
years have aroused such wide inter
est throughout the state as that of
Rev William E Hinshaw whose ap
plication for parole is now under con
sideration Today the state board of
parole met at the state prison at
Michigan City to hear testimony and
Monday the hearing is expected to be
concluded In this city and the deci
sion announced While friends of the
convicted pastor have been urging
his parole on the ground that he is
dying of tuberculosis many persons
of prominence have been active in op
posing his release from prison So
pronounced has become the public ag
itation over the matter that Governor
Marshall hasdemanded that the case
be given the most thorough investiga
tion before an action is taken on the
application for parole
The crime for which Hinshaw was
convicted was the murder of his
wife in 1895 His defense at the trial
as that she had been killed by bur
glars There were no eyewitnesses
to the murder but the circumstantial
evidence was so strong that the hus
band was convicted and sentenced to
life Imprisonment After serving
about eight years influential friends
succeeded in getting a sixtyday pa
role for him and later he was given
an indefinite parole He returned to
his former home where some two
years later public indignation against
him was again aroused when he was
named as corespondent in a divorce
suit As a result of the scandal Gov
ernor Hanly promptly revoked the
parole and sent him back to prison
for life
