CHIEF JUSTICE WHITE
The new head ot the United States
supreme court is a Confederate vet
eran He made a splendid record
fighting under the Confederate flag
Speaking of the man the Dallas Times
Herald says
Justice White was born in Louisi
ana and he is a democrat He was ap
pointed to the supreme court by Gro
wer Cleveland and is now in his
sixtyfifth year not too old for a su
preme court chief justice He fought
for the Stars and Bars of the Con
federacy and emerged from the war
with an enviable record as a soldier
Brave in war he has been courag
eous as a jurist Sentiment has never
governed his opinions as to the law
He upheld the administration in all
the insular cases Investigating the
Philippines and other insular posses
sions and also was with the minority
court in voting to sustain the income
tax
President Taft has proven by his
action that he does not regard the
supreme court a political body He

his judicial temperament but if

Editor McCullom of the Waco Tri
bune has solved the problem of the
ages When hunters from his town
return with big stories of game killed
he makes them produce the game or
photographs of the real thing That
would work well here If the big ones
did not always get away
Very little is being said just now
about seeing to a Santa Claus for the
poor children of the city To make
the Santa Claus theory go good the
giver of gifts must play no favorites
Every child is entitled to a full stock

stocking that should be provided too
After the newspapers and politi

court the president came along and
named the men and knocked the papei

he cannot it seems put a man on the

The writer never scratched a demo
cratic ticket in his life but hell be
hanged If he can see why rules that
made Cannon the czar of the house of
congress and caused so much abuse
to be heaped on his head are not just
as bad rules when enforced by a dem
ocratic speaker K a thing is bad It
is bad regardless We have been
told time and again that the rules
under which Cannon drove the house
made him absolute master The same
rules would make any other man the
same thing A square deal is always

It was a determined group of work
ers which met last night at the Y M
C A campaign headquarters The re
sults reported were less than any
day since the campaign opened only
30000 being reported by the captains
The workers realize that they have
a very difficult proposition to secure
the balance of the fund and that it
will be impossible for them to raise
the full amount unless friends respond
more generously and many of the
number who have made gifts increase
the amount of their subscriptions
The opportunity for helpful service
which will be manifest in the associa
tion for years to come is at hand
and the leaders feel that with the
facts presented the people of Pales
tine will respond as they usually do
Every one lealizes that the comple
tion of the fund practically depends
upon the large gifts Two of 10000
each and four or five of 5000 today
it is felt would insure the 350000
There seems to be a misunderstand
ing in reference to the money which
is being secured It should be defi
nitely stated again that each year the
association secures subscription in
addition to the memberships and
part of the 350000 will be used for
this purpose together with the bud
get of 1910 and 1911 The swimming
pool has never been fully paid for
there being a balance on that and
the cement walks which have been
placed around the building In addi
tion it is desired to erect a porch at
the front which will make the build
ing more attractive and will be spec
ially useful for six months of the
year for social gatherings and also
for religious meeting Furthermore
by the expenditure of a fsw hundred
dollars the association is granted the
privilege of the railroad companys
water supply and when this is done
at least 30000 a year will be saved
on its current budget
Surely for J the purposes named
friends will assist at this time of
emergency Palestine must not fail
and we believe she will not
In the reports Team No 3 Captain
W L Maury announced 12750 this
time passing the 50000 mark as a
total Team No 7 Captain J C Sil
liman reported 6C50 with practical
ly 40000 to its credit Team No 6
Captain C Pearson reported 5250
and is in third place The total re
ported up to last night was 217850
Workers will meet again tonight at
7 oclock and every one is urged to
be on hand
It would be encouraging to the
workers to have friends phone in the
amount of their pledges Subscrip
tions made now can be paid onehalf
January 15th and onehalf April 15
