THE NEW YEAR
The year 1910 now coming to a
close has been a good one in many
respects to Palestine and Anderson
county particularly good to all of
East Texas We have suffered no
material reverses and Palestine has
gone right ahead building until today
the town is a great deal better town
physically than It was one year ago
In all probability this development
will continue and the people here will
continue to prosper This Is very
gratifying that we as n community
can go along the even tenor of our
way and watch our town develop
watch new buildings go up and see
ing new enterprise put under way
But while taking pleasant unction in
this fact brethren we must remem
ber too that there is a limit to such
development It is the history of
cities that they cannot develop in the
right sense unless there is enterprise
to support such development and we
may build houses and stack up stores
hut our prosperity will not be endur
ing unless at the same time we are
building factories nnd developing our
outlying country A town cannot live
on itself and prosper any ihore than
a man can swap dollars in his own

pockets We must have something to
sell beyond our own needs This
something must be created in the
factory or on the farm It is a time
to choose we can probably go on
for years growing gradually and slow
ly or by concerted effort directed in
the right course we can build fast and
permanently We have as good coun
try as there is under the sun there
is no misgiving about this but it pays
no revenue only as it is put to use
Our first and best worlc for the new
year Is to bring new people into the
country to build homes and cultivate
the fields And this is a work that
is in easy reach
A Happy New Year in advance
Well so long hope well see you
next year
A Happy New Year to the city and
county officials Give us the best in
the house Us means the people
Thd tfast year has been a good one
to most of us In the providence of
God lets make the next one even
better
This is weather but later on these
rains will be of great value The
country could stand a solid week of
slow rain
A Happy and Prosperous New Year
to the business men of Palestine
May your trade be bigger and better
and your collections Al
A Happy New Year to the members
of the Board of Trade Get together
for a big years work We can get
results when we get in earnest
The Herald has never been able to
understand why a ball was a neces
sary part of a state or national inau
guration It is a state occasion wlien
a man takes an oath to give his peo
ple the very best service of which
he is capable and a good old demo
cratic reception it occurs to us would
be more in accord with the spirit of
the occasion than a fiddle and toe
program
Announcement is made that the
new penitentiary management under
Governorelect Colquitt will reopen
the iron plant at the Rusk prison and
make an effort to make it pay its
way if not a profit This iron mill
proposition has been a trying one
and twice has it been abandoned by
the state The iron ore is there in
unlimited quantifies the timber for
fuel is plentiful and within easy
reach and it seems that if iron man
ufacture could be conducted success
fully anywhere it could be done at
Rusk under the proper management
Whether It can be done or not still
remains to be seen
