THOMAI B. JOHNSON. Business Manager and Treasurer Birroßp. Johnson * Winter Entered at Postoffice at Ban Antonio,Texa* as second class matter. THUPAPIS WLlJea*"* >7 JewJpmTi Tuesday, January 12, 1886, Thb Luling Diily W»*p ha* lost its •ting. It’s gone dead Tmi was skating on Braze* River at Waco. That sound* hinny for the Sunny South. Thk Senate i* now fairly in the ailver discussion, each member giving notice that he will bav* something to say on the question. This Is the grand oppor tunity for buncombe. Thk Fort Worth Gazette still has free grass on the brain. It Is too goou and live a paper to talk such nonsense. A herd law. In connection with the lease law, Is what Texas will have, and with it peaee and prosperity. Thk Laredo Times should send to Its readers a lexicon of the peculiarly cor rupted English dialect in use on the Rio Grande frontier. It advises the silver advocates to "stand pat" against Presi dent Cleveland. The President will have to call in bis Interpreter* to ex plain the term. It i* generally eon*eded that th* lead ing question before th* people is the sil ver question. Th* grsat majority down this way are sliver men, and if Cleve land does not believe It, Juat let him turn some *f that surplus silver In the vault* loose, and see bow qutek It would b* appropriated. Thb merchants of El Paso have peti tioned Congress to tak* some action about the *etabliahment of tbe free zone nt Paso del Norte, the Mexican aid* of th* river. What can Congress do about It? The remedies suggested by the peti tioners are to either make a reci pwal treaty, or establish a similar zone *n this std* of tbe river. Tbe flrat is by all means the best, if not the only remedy. Skvkjul of th* most enterprising of tbe State papers sre favor ng the ob servance of an arbor day. Tbe Light has spoken of tbls m-tter several times before, and reiterates that tbe celebra tion of an arbor day In -'an Antonio would be productive of much good. There are many parks her- that are now but baren Wastes, that with trees could be made places of beanty that would r fleet much credit on the elty, outside of affording grateful shade to tbe weary. A cording to the Journal, the Eagle Pae* Refrigerator Company, last week, nlangbtered 40 beeves and 2S muttons and shipped them to New Orleans. It only remains with the railroad whether aald enterprise will prove a grand *'«c oess or not. With tbe San Antonio and Aransas Pass road completed, this city would have tbe advantag* over any other in th* State a* th* location for a similar enterprise, and yet not a single move ha« been taken In that direction. Ie the golden opportunity t* slip from Ban Antonio and go to Uss favored townsT Poor old John Roach was among the first victim* of th* Cleveland adminis tration, became be bad been and was then the ship builder of th* United State*. Th* Secretary of the Navy claimed that th* veaaals then In doev would not float, and that In fact Mr. Roach was a fraud of the first water, and cons-quently must be aurpreesvd. This was don* by refusing to pay the money he had already eam*d, or ac oeptlng tbe contract* be had made. The cruiser Dolphin was made the subject »t mueb trouble on tbe part of Mr. Roocb, and much criticism on the part of th* navy official*. They said (be oould not itand in any gale, and then tbe Democratic papert (houted about Republican corruption. But tbe Dol phin went to sea, stood tbe test of a iM hours gale, and tbe Secretary of tbe Navy ba* at last concluded that ah* is a good boat, and will do. Thus It is that poor old John Ro»<h has been vindi cated, although made a bankrupt by tbe admlniatrat on. —Tbe only cigarette* which do not Stick to tbe IIp« «e Opera Putt?. At thk "tirat blush," to use tbe In spired words of City Attorney Newton, one would be led to believe that the Times bad sorter put it* foot Into It. In tbls city printing controversy, and tbe further 1t I* discussed, the more con firmed would that opinion be. The fol lowing from the Express Is given entire, because it coverstbe ground completely. Tbe Express says: “The Times wants the Express to make a direct charge in connection with the city printing, though why it should be called upon t* do so is beyond its comprehension. However, to accommodate the Times, the Express will charge that the print ing of the opinion of City Attorney Newton on the validity of the water works contract was not authorized by the Council, and tbe city cannot pay for It without violating Its contract with th* Light, and laying Itself open to dam ages. The Express will further amuse the Times by saying that while it has no interest in who gets the city printing or job work. It has an Intere t in seeing that the Mayor of the city protects i'S Interests, and does not vlolste the good faith of tbe city. If the Mayor is Inde p< ndent of the city’s laws and contracts, the people ought to know it. Tbe case under consideration would make a good test. It makes not the slightest differ ence whether the work was done at the Times newspaper office or Job office, or any other office; its printing was unau thorized, and. if It had.been authorized, it should have gone - o tbe city printer The law I* plain, the duty of the Mayor is plain. The duty of the Inance Com mittee also is plain, and they will dis play wisdom by attending to it strictly." A Wk»thkrkokp syndicate has been form d for the purpose of buying about 3.000.000 acres of "rich gold and silver lands” in Mexico. That is right about tbe gold and silver lands, but they don't get any of tbe minerals unless they dis cover or buy the mines, and continue to work them. Mexico has on* of tbe best mining laws in the world, and don't sell mineral lands by the million acres. Any person discovering minerals can register tbe same and enter into posses sion of a limited tract by working it, no matter on whose land It may be, or who may be the owner. The Victoria Advocate has thrownit* weight in favor of Galveston as the one point on which th* harbor appropria tion thould be centered This one man and one town talk is too narrow for a State like Texas What is the matter with Pass Cavallo? Knowing that it is not practical as a deep water pass, tbe Advocate narrowly would give all to Galveston rather than bav* Aransas Pass get Its share. This Is nawortby ofsueb a broad guage paper as th* Ad vocate has always been. West Texas wants and will secure a deep water har bor, and Aransas Fas* will b* the place. GMveston should also have it, and every other place where d*ep water can be secured and a «af* harbor mad*. Texas will n**d them all la a very f*w years. "Th* present is not a very good time to go tn Wan Antonio, as the city Is in fested with small-pox,” say* the Paris News. This is only on* of the hundreds ot similar Items to be found tn the State paper*. Who is responsible for this? In the Hillsboro Mirror I* th* *ntlre dispatch sent from this city to the Fort Worth Gazette, dated January 0, and headed: "San Antonio’s Small-Pox.” These dispatches are sent abroad with out the explanation that there I* not the slightest danger of the disease spread l.ig. a* It ha* never been epidemic here ever when there wa* no Board of Htaltb, a* there aow Is, and an efficient one at that People of tbl* city would not know that there bad been a case of small pox within tbe past three years had they not seen It In the daily paper*. There I* Ju,t as good a chance of being struck by lightning as to catch the small-pox in tbi* city. Even if you wanted to you could not find a case. Thb Bandera Bugle print* tbe follow ing startling news, and the Light would notify the scrambling thousand* that will rush to the new El Dorado, that in its advertising column* will be found the names of the most reliable business tirms from which to buy supplies and outfits, and if the hotels become inade quate to accommodate tbe tide of gold seeker*, that tbe city will furnish camp ing room tree: "Mr. F. W. Stidham, from leaker, wbo was visiting Bandera last week, brought tbe startling and in teresting news *z a great gold discovery on a creek about nine miles north of Leakey, somewhere in the neighbor hood of Frio Water Hole. According to Mr. Stidham, the ore has been essayed and it panned out SCA to the ton. Twenty wagon loads of th* ore were reedy to start to Hondo City, from which place a car load was to be sent to Silver City to be thoroughly asseyed. Should ell this come out to be es described will not Edwerd* county haves boom!” The manner of electing officers in our sister "republic” of Mexico is rather unique. An eleetion for governor took piece In Coehulle on th* 3d of thi* month, end Gelen we* “elected." Sev ere! election* bed previously tek** plan*, but a* one Faleon had apparently gotten a goodly number of votes, end, a* hl* friend* claimed,* majority, and there being some objection t* him by the Federal Government, the State waa pat under military rule, and a federal general appointed provisional governor. Several more election* were subse quently held, with like result, and followed by a decree of the military governor, that owing to disturbance* the elections were illegal. In the last elections, tbe one on tbe 3d, the Falcon ists were notified by tbe constituted authorities that it would b* u-eless for them to vote, as tbelr maa could not bo "elected” in any event, and therefore Galen waa "elected” by an overwhelm ing majority. From now on. peace and civil government will reign in Coabila. Such Is republicanism In Mexico, but the redeeming feature is that few of the natives outside of those directly inter ested in holding office, nor tbe fo-elgn er* care which party rules, as publio order Is generally well maintained un der all circumstance*, and tbe govern- ment might change daily without the outside world being a wire of it. except through th* bout *-d official*. Thk following is taken from the Hous ton Post, and a majority of the reader* ot rhe Lwht will be found In sympathy with tbe sentiments therein expressed: “General Roland McKenzie, of the United State* army Is teported to be at death’s door. For some two year* he has been confined to a lunatic asylum, and if bis case is Incurable it will be a mercy for him to die. He was an officer who endeared bimaelf to tbe people of Texas by bis vigorous and efficient pro tection of the frontier from Indian and Mexican raiders. He. with Lieutenant Bullis to carry out his orders, had no hesitation wiiat. ver in invading Mexico and shooting tbe r iscals on Mexican soil. It is men w itb his backbone wbo are needed on the frontier.
