London, February 18.—Both Houses were crowded, Lord Hartington took a seat behind the treasury bench and was loudly cheered by the conservatives. The crowd outside of the parliament buildings, which usually gives an en hu siastic reception to the Prime Minister, only faintly cheered Gladstone upon his arrival. There is a general feeling of discontent over the tneagreness of the Government’s statements regarding its proposed Irish measures. The fact that the Government made no announcement of its programme for the introduction of bills affecting Ireland, is taken as an in dication that the Cabinet is still unde cided as to what course it shall pursue. In the House of Lords the Marquis of Salisbury said he would wait to see what changes six weeks would give to the policy of the Government. His re marks were greeted with cheers. The tories vainly tried to goad Lord Rose berry, Foreign Secretary, to speak on tbe situation in the East, which is very critical. IHOS ZOFFS In tbe House of Commons Gladstone said the desire of tbe Government was to propose to the House measures of a positive and substantial character deal ing with Ireland respecting social order and the questions of land and the future government of Ireland, including a method for such government. He said that a further statement on the subject would be made on the 22d of March. The' House resumed debate on the address in reply to the Queen's speech. Lord Randolph Churchill and the rank and tile of the Tories abused and forced Gladstone, and provoked from the Prime Minister a dignified speech, in which he said the Government had a severe and difficult task which it would endeavor to perform resolutely nnd as speedily as possible. Lord Salisbury, commenting on this afternoon’s announcements In the House of Commons and House ef Lords by Gladstone and Lord Granville, respect ively, complains that the Government is "treating Pailiament and a powerful in terest with singular levity.” Mr. Chamberlain denies that there is any dispute or difference of ooinion con cerning the Government’s policy tow ards Ireland between himself and his col leagues in the cabinet. A. HAMPEL RO2ERT H HUHSTOCK A feeling of agitation prevailed on the Stock Exchange to-day, owing to lack of confidence among business men in the stability of Gladstone’s government. The wildest rumors have been in circu lation, one of them that Lord Roseberry, Foreign Secretary, bnd resigned, and another that tbe Greeks had crossed the Turkish frontier. These reports weSe denied, and towards Hie close a recovery took place in the market. TEXAS. Reported expressly for the Light, by 8. 8 Floyd A Co., 21 Soledad Street: New York. Do Detectives Detect? That is an open question. But there is no question as to what Brown's Iron Bitters caa do. Brown's Iron Bitter* will put new;spirits into disconsolate and languid ladies. Will invigorate tbe blood and put roses on pale cheeks. Will stir up lazy livers and set them at work. Will tone up weak stomachs and enable tbe work of digestion to go on gloriously. Mrs. Taylor, of Man chester, Va., says; “By tbe use of Brown's Iron Bitters I am entirely cured of malarial fever, poor appetite and debility.” Slight Fire. Tbe tire was discovered In the boudoir of Mamie Lee. ard tbe Hames were spreading quickly when they were promptly extinguished by the aid of a blanket without doing nnv great dam age. The cause of tbe tire was ilia smouldering stump of a cigarette care lessly thrown down on a table. Hit On the Head. About 3 o'clock this morning, as Har ford Richardson was driving his back down Commerce street, three men hailed him and asked him to drive to Garden street. As the price offered by the men was not sufficient, Richardson refused to take them One of the men then sprang up and bit him with a stick on the head nearly knocking him from the box liu mediately after doing this, they ran oft down Garden street, and as there was no policeman In sight, Richardson had to drive ot! without having the satisfaction of knowing his assailants were under arrect That Trse. Oli, woodman, spare that tree In youth it sheltered rue,” was the cry that went up from the dwellers In the vicinity of North Flores and Belvin streets, yesterday aflernoon, when street Commissioner Nelson or dered his men to cut down a beautiful, large spreading liveoak tree that stood Just a little out of the line of the side walk into the street. The tree was cut down and is now piled on tbe only woed pile at the bat cave. Mr. Nelson says there were some very strong objections raised to tbe tree being cut. but it is supposed on account of his gigantic di mensions, he surmounted all difficulties, and rode triumphantly to the bat cave on the tree. Appreciated. Tbe Floresville Chronicle shows its appreciation of the Light's work look ing to tbe advertising of Southwestern Texas, in the following: "The write-up of Floresville and Wilson County gen erally, contained in tbe San Antonio Light of the Bth instant, prepared by Mr. A. W. Gifford, one of the proprie tors of that paper, is comprehensive and very interesting. It will no doubt do fhis section much good, and every man in the county should feel under obliga tions to the enterprising gentleman who prepared the paper and gave It to the world free of expense. Next week we shall publish as much of it as we can find room for in our columns. Extra copies of the Light can be had at their office in San Antonio.” Murderous Assault. Meters. The negro did not show many bruises suggestive of the rough treatment he alleged. Neverthe less the men were arrested by the police. On to the Gulf.
