Now York Cotton Market.
New York. Oct. 4 —The cotton mar
ket opened flrm at an advance of tram
> to I points on recovery at Liverpool.
In addition to thia the receipts prom
ised to run little under last year*, and
showers were reported over some sec
tions of the belt. Aftqr saining little
Store on December and January the
list eased off to about Ipst night's
Anal under liquidation and bear pres
sure. At this level trading became
slightly more active and the market
was forced up to a point or no over
the opening figure, ruling steady to
•rm around that level.
Cargill A RichardaoiAs Letter.
The cotton market was also a rot
ten market. Cables at the opening,
nbout met our decline yesterday, but
strengthened considerably at the clos
ing. and the early loss of & to 1 points
was all recovered on the nearby op
tions. October closing a point net ad
vance and faraway deliveries only s
■hade lower on the day. Spots were
14 points lower on sales of 5000 bales.
With the encouragement afforded b?
the English market, prices on thi.
might have done better, but the open
Ing advance of 2 to 5 points was seize<
upon to bsmmer prices and at th<
noon hour the marxet was selling al
the way from 8 to 14 points under las
night's closing bids, with seeming):
no support, even from short covering
Spots at the south appeared to be it
poor demand and generally lower
with the same conditions prevailing at
the interior. I IP 4'
The weekly crop and weather bul
Jetin was J considered indifferent ir
tenor, for the reason perhaps that I
was slightly better than expected
Summarized, it reads as follows: “It
the'central and eastern sections of th<
belt there was little or no rain dur
Ing the week, and picking progress**
rapidly under favorable conditions. It
Texas and Oklahoma, however, picking
was retarded by heavy rains whicl
caused considerable damage to opei
cotton, especially in Texas, where th<
opening of young bolls has beer
checked, and renewed growth of plant
Reports indicate that about one-hal
of the prospective yield has been gath
ered in central and eastern portion:
of the belt, the proportion gathered
Vqtag considerably greater in Texas,
where probably 60 or 70 per cent of
crop has been secured, while not more
than ten per cent has been gathered in
Oklahoma and Indian Territory, and
Arkansas. On the whole it appears
that slightly more than half the crop
is now gathered.”
The report by states is a poor af
fair. showing light yield everywhere,
and reiterates last week’s statement
that prospects for a top crop are very
dismal, while excessive rains in some
sections have caused damage and re
tailed picking and marketing cotton.
Following a monthly bureau which
indicated a decline of 16 points for the
month of September, and right on the
heels of last week’s unfavorable bul
letin, the market, logically, should
have done better, but this is one of the
times when influences: facts in fact,
count for little, and the unloading of
long stuff was the only thing thought
Of. The nine cent mark was soon
reached in two of the New Orleans op
tions. both October and December
breaking to 8.96 near the close.
We are far from pessimistic on cot
ton after a break of 150 to 220 points,
and while influences at present are
against prices, we would rather buy
cotton and stay with It.

Now Orleans:
The local spot market la said to be
Irregular and lower to sell. Fully 66

New Orleans:
Too weekly bureau summary la non
committal as to what progress the
growing crop made during the past
week, but makes the statement that
60 to 70 per cent of the prospective
crop In Texas has already been gath
ered and that allghtly more than one
half of the entire prospective crop had
already been picked, all of which
points to a abort crop.
New York:
If the crop ia 10,000,080 It means
that about 8.800,000 bales have boon
gathered. Does any sane man believe
any such thing? From thia point of
view the bureau Is exceedingly bullish
and I think as soon as the people can

they will look at It the same way.
