"The house hill for the aliriinmm of New Moxico will not be culled up until next aowiion, and its fute nt that time will tleiiond upon the jirogreea of said Territory In the matter of making ite!f republican."- Glole-Democrat. A moat di'iinning find &lmmcful statement it is, too, coming from a leading republican journal. The Globe-Democrat has been pcrsintentty nnd malignantly fight ing tho projHwition to give ptate IkhkI to Neav Mexico. Tlio claim has Ikhmi, though, that tho Ter ritory IliaI not a onflicient j)opu lation to f ntitlo it to admission to tho family of states, and that its citizenship is not of a quality that should be trusted with tho respon sibility of government. In answer to somo of these charges of the GlolxvDemoecrat tho Times said several months ngo that the only way to get tho con sent of the United States senate to tho statehood of New Mexico would bo found in the Territory's becoming republican. Now a great republican organ brazenly admits the truth of tho charge. And in proof of its truth tho recent action of the senate may 1k referred to. Final action on the bill hos been jxistpoueJ til) the December sess ion of congress or until after the election, which says: "If you vote the republican ticket, Miss New Mexico, wo will adopt you as a sister; but if you remain demo cratic you shall also bo continued merely asa wurd, with the prospect of continued roblxry by political bummers. If tho people of New Mexico are men as we take them to be they will not be bullied into such servility. 3ut tho Santa Fe New Mexican evidently thinks they cau be worked that way. After quoting tho abovo paragraph from the Globe-Democrat, it says: "It is very tiecesFiiry thnt the Terri tory eheuld elect a republican delegate nt the coming election; if this ia done there can be but little doubt that tho bill containing an enabling net for New Mexico and now pending will become law during the second aoasion of the present congress." The self-resjiocting voter of New Mexico should resent such sinister attacks upon their manhood, even at the cost of delaying statehood till the meetingof another congress. DEPEW ON CLEVELAND. About two years ago Chauncey M. Depew, tho silver-tongued ora- toi of New lork, hud occasion to resond to a toast at a banquet at which ( rover Cleveland was pres. ent. Perhaps, at that time, Chaun. cey did not dream that Mr. Clevo. land would be tho nominee of the democratic party for President this year and that he might rend with great satisfaction the unqual ified endorsement of his character by one of the leading republicans of this country. doming us it üiü from such a source and at a public banquet, it may bo rather hard for republicans i 11 1 - r - v to swanow ana iur. uepew is no !oubt kicking himself for furnish such an excellent quality of that the political complexion f the senate may le changed next March, but the probabilities are that tho republican majority will lie wijed out and that tho alliance senators will hold the balance of Iowcr. If tho al'ianco Benators should bo favorable to tho admis sion of New Mexico it is not prob able that tho bill will be delayed longer than until tho first session of tho next congress. The Amalgamated Association has been taught that it could not manage the property of others and dictate a jolicy to bo pursued by the Cornegio Company. Lalnirers have tho right to ask for higher wages, but they have no right to use force to compel employers to accedo to their terms, noither have they the right to threaten others who aro willing to work for the prices which employers are willing to pay. A gotxl many of tho mem bers of the Amalgamated Associa tion were not in favor of using force but they were overruled by a mob which wanted to manage the whole aiTair. Tho association has lieen lieaten, and had it not been for the unlawful attempt to laud an armed force at the works by the Carnegie people, public sym pathy would have been with Car negie. As it is, both the Carnegie people and the labor leaders are violators of the law and equally mtETAnr Klkins coJd have 1 V . t nan tno Tioinmntion for governor of u est Virginia if ho would have accepted it.
