M., June 5, 1902. Kditok Chikftain: Judge Kinkade of Toledo, Ohio, recently discharged the regular grand jury, selected another and said the following1 in his charge to the jury: "It is currently reorted that there are boards (jury commissioners) and individuals in this county so crooked that it is impossible to get any measure past them with out the use of money. You have lived in thiscounty for years and you know to whom this talk re fers. It is said certain lines of usiness flourish because they j ay for protection. The money is divided among those who scheme and work for the protec tion of thieves." We submit the foregoing actions and remarks by Judge Kjnkivde to the people of ocurro County with,ou comment. Operations at the Graphic smelter near Kelly were suspend ed very suddenly Sunday morn ing when it was discovered that steam was escaping through an opening in the boiler into the lire-box. The accident seems peculiarly unfortunate from the fact that only three or four more days were necessary to make a complete clean-up of ore in the bins. Captain titch, however, takes a philosophical view of the case and congratulates himscl' that the boiler was found to be defective before it blew up with the probability of killing three or four men. Several carloads of bullion have been sold from the Graphic smelter in the last two or three weeks. (art! of TIihiiVh. Director Elect of the New Mexico School of Mines. The Las Ve fi Itall Ten in Succumb to the School of Mine Tram after a Gallant Struggle. Nine gory scalps dangle at the belts of the School of Mines base ball team. The Las Vegas nine arrived in Socorro on schedule time Wednesday morning and were escorted to the quarters chosen for them at the Arcade. At 3 o'clock in the afternoon they marched to the ball ground and to honorable defeat. The two teams lined up as follows: Laa Vepas Socorro C. Rhode Pitcher J. Havcrly O. Harron Catcher. . .R. McDonald H. C. Hays. ..First base E. Haca L. Tipton. . .Second base....F. Wilson F. H. Wolcot. Third base. .E. Cosrove M. Otero Short stop. .. .11. Howell W. Taylor. ..Center field.. ,F. Zinirerly T. Tipton Left field N. iiaca J. Levy- Right field. . . .J. Martinez Probert and Hill acted as um pires. The game was without sensa tional features. Haverly, the left-handed phenomenon, pitched a beautiful game for the home team. It was amusing to see the looks of surprise and chagrin on the faces of the visitors as they took their places at the bat and smashed one, two, three great holes in the atmosphere with the regularity of clockwork. Nobody could have done better work behind the bat than Mc Donald did. Howell, Wilson, and Emilio Daca were true to their excellent records. Charlie Rhodes, the diamond-stud twirl er for the visitors, pitched three innings and then retired tired at seeing his fielders chase the fly ing sphere. Seven runs were debited to Rhodes' account in those three innings. It must be said of the Las Vegas team that they tried hard. Even when it seemed as though they would be shut out entirely they never flag ged in their efforts. When Otero finally succeeded in crossing the home plate in the seventh inning he was presented with an elegant bouquet by a lady in the grand stand. The visitors conducted themselves in so manly a fashion during their stay in Socorro that there are many here who will wish them better success should they come again. following is the score by in nings: Las Vegas 00000021 1 4 Socorro 21400305 15 COURT PROCEEDINGS.
