Governor George Curry Mon day issued a proclamation desig nating Friday, March 27th, as Arbor Day. The document gives the purpose of Arbor Day and urges its proper observance. "In accordance with custom and law, I, George Curry, gov ernor ,of the Trrritory of New Mexico, do hereby designate Friday, March 27th. A. I). 1'HIS, as Arbor Day in the territory of New Mexico. "Tree culture, as is well known. is the principal object for which this clay whs established, and it s certain! v an object that should inspire in its behalf interest and activity on the part of every pub lic spirited citizen in New Mexi co. Tree culture in our terri tory is a valuable public improve ment as well as a InNiutil'ier of private grounds and parks. Its neglect throughout the union by past generations and the whole sale devastation and destruction of numerous varieties of trees in large mountain forests as well as smaller areas of woodland for purposes of private gain, has alarmed the entire nation in that a nationol resource is being en dangered; and the government authorities are taking vigorous measures towards arresting this destruction and towards adopt ing practical methods of refores tation. "I recommend that Arlor Day in New Mexico be considered a holiday in all the schools; that the school authorities take this occasion to beau til y the grounds about the buildings by the plant ing of trees. The county school superintendents are hereby re quested to publish this procla mation throughout their respect ive counties, and to encourage the teachers to take an active in terest in the plans of the day. "I cordially invite the author ities of every city, town and vil lage in the territory to look into the tree question of their respect ive communities and take steps towards the improvements that will suggest themselves to their minds.
