Houston, Tex., Kept. 12 J D Dillon commercial agent of the Santa Fe has-returned from a trip to Virginia Point. lie made the trip from Hitchcock to Vir ginia Point on foot and gives a graphic description of his jour ney. Twelve miles of track and bridges lire gone south of Hitch cock,' said he. I walked, waded andwam from Hitchcock to Vir ginia Point and nothing could be seen in all that country bat death and desolation. The prairies are covered s ith water, and I do not think I exaggerate when I say that not less than 5,000 horses and cattle, dead, a; e to be found along the line of tricks south of Hitch cock. The little towns along the railroad are aU swept away, and the sight ia the most horrible I ever witnessed, when I reached a point about two north of Vir; ginia Point I taw some bodies floating on the prairie, and from that point to Virginia Point dead bodies conld be seeu fromthe railroad track floating about tfie prairie. At Virginia Point notb Is left. About 100 cars of mer chandise that reached Virginia l'oiut on the International rail road on the night of tho storm are scattt red about over the prairie, and their contents will no doubt be a total loss. br jak of pestilence is being neg lected. This morning it was'found that large numbers of bodies had been previously thrown into the bay were washed back "upon the shore aud the situation was thus rendered worse than ' bef ore they were taken in barges and tbqjwn into the water. It wfll now never bo known how Galveston Sept. 12. (Sp m., Via Houston, midnight.) All attempts at burying the dead have utterly been abandoned and bodies are now being disposed of in the swiftest manner possible. Scores of thciii have lcn - buried today and hundreds were taken out of the sea and thrown overboard. The safety of the living is nowibc paramount question ard- nothing that will tend to prevcut tho out- many have lost thoir lives in this awful catastrophe. Mayor Jones of Galveston thinks the dead . will amount to 5000 and others whose apportumties for judging are less than that of the Mayor place it as high as 10,000. j Robbing and rioting are going on, and as the town ia in darkness, the efforts of the millitary to con trol the lawless element are not very Bnccessfal. Big bonfires were fcuilt at various points, made from the heaps of rubbish to ena ble troops to see where watchrnl- ness was needed. .,- ----- 2 'f - Belated Locals.
