CHICKASHA, I. T. SEP. 25. '06
Llnl,
It ii time fr txor's to otn tbeir ! f
eyes to the fact that the mail order
business is a humbug from what
ever standpoint it is viewed.
THE MAIL ORDER HUMBUG
Mr. Hayes and Jude Bridges
have a clear cid to the Domination
for delegate in their respective
parties in this district so far. It
is not because Chickasha politicians
are lacking in ambition or patriot
ism bnt because they are modest
and believe in the Scriptural doc
trine of "in hoDor pieferrlng one
another."

"The American people like to
be humbugged." said a famous
American.
Among all the humbugs that de
light the people none is more delsu
sive than the mail order system of
buying goods. It is strange indeed
that so many people can be deceiv
ed to the extent that they think
they can send to St. Lonis, Chicago
or some other city and buy goods of
equal quality for less than they can
buy them at home. Tbe system is
a very simple one. A big catalogue
is sent out, handsomely illustrated,
the goods show up fine in pictures,
and, to be fair, tbe prires are won
derfully low. Some staple articles,
whose values are well known, are
marked very low, as a bait. The
easy buyer, eagerly takes the bait,
swallows the whole catalogue.
When the goods come, they look
well, of course; it takes a skilled
eye to detect the difference between
them and the real first class goods
that are sold by the home merchant,
but it is a well known fact that
these mail order concerns bay
up all the shoddy stuff in the conn
try to turn loose on their victims,
and when the purchaser has paid
their price with the freight added,
he has an article that doesn't com
pare in valne with the article that
can be bought at home for the same
pries. It's a gaitse of humbug
from start to finish.
It is sometimes imagined that
century peop.e aone are the vic-j
tims of the mail order house, but
wonld beleiveyou that there are ac
tually are people in Chickasha who
are caught on the game? Its actually
a solemn fact. Here we are, all
working together, trying to build
a city. We are dependent one up
on another for our success in busi
ness, and yet there are some people
who insist upon cheating them
selves and cheating our home mer-1
chants by sending off for their
goods. The home merchant con
tributes to every public cause, to
schools, public roads and bridges,
to fair premiums, to charity and
everything else he pays out his
money at home and he rightiy ex
pects the patronage of home people
to compensate him for his outlay.
The mail order house contributes
not a dollar to any enterprise in
Chickasha or the surrounding
country. Are you treating the
home merchant fair when send your
money away or when you get on
the train and go to Kansas City,
Chlahoma City or any other place
Senator Beveridge thinks the Cu
ban trouble will not be settled till
your Uncle Samuel takes a good
strong dip into it, aud perhaps he
is right, but Cuba must be given
every opportunity to demonstrate
her inability to manage her own
affairs before Uncle Sam takes her
under his sheltering care.
Selfishjes is shortsighted policy
in building' a town as well as in in
dividual affairs. The man who
does not look to the welfare of his
neighbor and that of the commun
ity is blind to his own Interests. It
pays to be public spirited, liberal
