New Heat Unit. The line of gas for heating ns wU bs lighting has made obsolete the old unit the candle power, owing to the fact that this unit rates merely tb.6 brightness of the flame, not the heat ing power. Devllle and more recent experi menters discovered a remarkable pro portion between the light and heat of a mantle, and using this, makers are rating burners according to the units of heat given to them per unit of time In standard calorics. Gas of 5, 200 calories efiidency a cubic meter has been recommended as the stand ard. The latest designs of burners for heat and lighting require that the gas have a fairly constant consumption, since the maximum efficiency of the burner is attained only 'when the rela tive quantities of air and gas aro closely regulated. Water gas may be adud to pietiit excessive variation la calorific value. America. LOST Uetween 1. I. & C. and Fris ci depot, late Sunday afternoon. NATURE TEACHES THE RABBIT Instinct Alone, Not Thslr Parents, Tells Them How and What to Eat. In popular "nature literature" It Is Often stated that wild animals "go to school;" that the wood mothers teach their young both manners and morals that lead to the saving of their lives by grace of their legs. A writer, how ever, win has had a pair of raobits under constant observation, having taken them from their mother when they were but' to day old, declares that nature, In the guise of Instinct, was the od!" teacher they had or needed. The' babr rabbits got along excel lently. They soon began to crawl wab bllngly out of (heir nest and nibble at oats and to chew up whole blades of tender grass. ' Of several things I am positive. They never saw their mother "freeze," nor wash her face, nor sit up on her hind legs; nor could they have learned from her what is good to eat and what is poisonous. As soon as'fhey were strong enough to balance themselves, I saw them often fitting erect and snuffing the 'ilr. About the same time they were observed busily to wash their faces with their fore paws. Some tried to do it and fell over, unable to balance themselves. No experience was re quired for them to practice the art of washing. I tried to feed the rabbits with com mon vegptabln poison. Ry giving them a very small handful of grass with several sprigs of nightshade Inter mixed, I was able to note their pref erences. This experience was often repeated. In no case did I see them eat any nightshade. Evidently they possessed protective instincts which guarded them without a mother's teaching Country Life In America. Shaping the Pony. The formation of breeds of ponies in different parts of the world is one of the most Interesting things In con nection with horses, for, unlike the diminutive breeds In other kinds of domestic creatures as bantams. I among fowls, er the smaller varieties among dogs which have been bred i dewn below the normal she by the skill of man, the diminution which has resulted In any of the breeds of really Bmall ponies has been wholly j the work of nature. The horse only j attained the size that we are seeus ! tomed to consider as normal In the temperate zone and if taken to a very cold or very hot country he will In evitably deterlorsto In H does not deteriorate, however, in other re spects; Indeed, the pony of whatever type is much more thoroughly a horR, as regards the highest equine qunlltles and characteristics, than horses like those of the draft breeds, which greatly exceed in nl?.e the nor mal and origins.! type. Outing Mag azine. Th Obvious Reply, "Pa," inquired William, "what is burlesque?" "A burlesque, son," replied the fath er, "is a take-off." "Take off what?"' "Henry," interrupted the mother, who had been liatonlng to the. conver sation, "if you are going to answer that question I will leave the room." Judge. Diverse Causes. "Many a man becomes a cynic be cause he wag disappointed In love." ; "Ves," replied Mis Cayenne, "and many others, eventually become vjr ales becauss 'they were not."
