lo it that Italian vengeance which is
long suffering but never forgetting,
has been satisfied and the martyr
dom by Austrian gendarmes of Cicer
uacchio, an ardent Roman patriot, is
now avenged on the books of justice.
In August, 1S49, follow-in;; the tra
gic ietreat of Garibaldi over part of
the same territory where the Italians
are again lighting Austria for com
plete national and racial freedom,
Ciccruaechio was taken prisoner.
Through the initiative of an Austrian
gendarme official he was given a
summary court martial and quickly
executed. A little later orders to sus
pend the sentence came from higher
authorities.
A little tablet at Port to Telle on
the lower Po marks the spot where
Cieeruacchio paid the penalty to Aus
trianhalred for his efforts in behalf
of Italian freedom.
His death, like that of thousands
of other Italianpa triots who have
suffered a similar martyrdom at Aus
trian hands, wont unavenged until
August of this year.
On the morning of August 26, dur
ing a raid by Austrian airplanes, on
towns back of the Italian front, an
Austrian airplane was brought down
above Porto Tolle and fell directly
i:i front of the tablet commemorat
ing the martyrdom of Cieeruacchio.
The two occupants, an Austrian av
iation lieutenant and a sergeant es
caping from the machine, turned to
the tablet expecting to get an idea
of their whereabouts, read int., and
then turned to find themselves in
the hands of Italian gendarmes.
