IH Carbon county, named for its great deposits of
H coal and hydro-enrbons, will by the clone of the
B present calendar year (1916) have produced fully
H four million tons of coal. And, had it not been
H for the great car famine throughout nil this
B western country, the amount would go much in
HR excess of the figures given. Emery and Grand
B county mines, of which there arc two producers,
K one nt Mohrland nnd tho other nt Ncslcn, tapped
R by the Denver and Rio Grande system, will add
Hp to this on an average of six hundred tons n day
H for the twelve months, mnking a grand total for
K Eastern Utah of close to 4,200,000 tons. At two
M dollars n ton, which is n fnir average net to the
B producers at the mines, it will be seen that
B around $8,-100,000 is close to con company earn-
K2 Heading the list is Utah Fuel company with
Bf properties at Winter Quarters, Clear Creek, Utah
children locally in advnnced studies, though nil
of these coal camps have schools up to nnd in
cluding the eighth grade, and none better exist
nnywhere.
This has been n year of more than the ordin
ary for surface improvements nt the thirteen
producing camps of Carbon nnd Emery courttlcs,
where large sums of money have been spent for
dwellings, nmuscment halls and the like for the
comfort nnd enjoyment of employes, it bclnsr'
found that these considerations attract n much
better class of labor than where such conveni
ences nre not considered. Every camp in the
county hns progressed along these lines, and it
Is estimated tlutt $260,000 has been thus expend
ed. The miners' homes, as a general rule, are of
better construction nnd more comfortable than
nre those of the nvcrago dweller in the smaller
cities and towns. Close attention hns also been

Ef Panther Canyon, is second. Then follow Spring
ffR Canyon Coal company nt Cameron, Standard
HSj Coal company nt Standard, and the Carbon Fuel
H ' company nt Rains in production in the order
H named. Much of the coal in fact, nearly nil of
B it nt Sunnysldc goes into coke for the Utah
H I rtmcltorn and those of Montana nnd Nevada. The
H Kclchum Coal compnny is n new concern that in
H just starting in at Castle Gate with a present
H I output of around fivo railroad cars n day.
H , , The Kctchum company and tho Carbon Fuel

Crystal Conl company, on Ogdcn concern with
tho Drownings nt its head, was to have opened
this year on n large scale, but will do nothing
now until next spring. Its properties nre reach
ed by the Denver nnd Rio Grnndc, a short dis
tance west of Helper, nnd comprises some six
hundred acres. When work begins something
like $1,000,000 will be spent before anything is
sent to mnrkct. The conl is of the same excellent
quality as that sent out from Castle Gate, Storm,
Cameron, Standardvlllc and Rains. The "wagon
haul" mines that supply a large portion of the

Hjfl' -At several of the camps Mack Hawk

H creased voluntarily by the operators, where 11
H was seen that worklngmcn were entitled to
H consideration. Labor troubles in consequence
H are nn unthought of thing. The percentage
H jf English-speaking miners nnd others employed
Hl in Carbon county nnd foreigners is about half
H Figures show that around $375,000 is pnid out
Hj each month nt the mines for labor, not including
H top men nnd clerical nnd other forces. This
H money is, for the greater pnrt, spent right here
xcoal to Price and nearby settlements have done
well the past year.
In tho hydro-carbon field the mines of the
Uintah Bnsin are sending in their usual consign
ments of clnteritc, gilsonitc, asphaltum and
other "wax" products. Utah Ozokerite company
at Colton has been working n Inrgo forco of men,
nnd, owing to tho European war, finds a splendid
mnrkct in New York for everything produced.

B their surplus to these camps for a ready cash
(market nt tho best prices. Price, being the cen
ter of this great industry of mining, derives a
, great and ever increasing trade from these
J; camps. Many miners have also bought property
H here at the county seat and are schooling their

eral hundred ncres of ground. They have moun
tains of the very finest kind of paving mnterlal.
Altogether great are Carbon and Emery coun
ties, ns .well as all of Eastern Utah. The year
1917 will break all previous records in coal and
.oke production and in the hydro-carbon fields.
