Upon the reception of Optimists
letter the other day we were not af
fraid of his arguments or their effects
upon democratic unity but we dis
liked to furnish any provocation what
ever likely to set the mud mill on I
street to grinding out its daily grist of
low blackguardism that the scent of
anything like want of harmony in dem
ocratic ranks would prove a sweet
I morsel under its vile tongue but more
especially as it gave the Splatterblotch
an opportunity to wreck its hatred
upon us personally Weso stated to
Optimist and deplored his resoultion
to publish It upon that ground alone
But it has been done and we propose to
meet the Splatterblotch on eyery foot
of the ground If in such a discussion
as this ia i likely to prove Optimist
stands in the line of fire he will re
member that it is his and not our fault
We herewith publish the characteristic
I quotation and comments and propose
to comment upon them frankly and
J care little if Optimists corns are trod
den upan a little in passing
I We expressed a fear a few days ago
I
that our colonel was going back
Rain to populism We seem not to
havebeen alone in our apprehension
for now a staunch democrat writes to
jojir neighbor as follows
1 The party at home needs and the party in
1 general deserves better things said ot it than
the presenttcritioiemB of Tilt DISPATCH We
are trying to build up u party in this county
and in this territory and we have a right to
expect euoport and encouragement from
THE DISPATCH And then whatever iiJuv be
laid of the party outside uf Utah the I cord
of the partyin this territory in this coutti
I and her cities is one to be proud of Why not
point out the partys virtues rather than e
ufgerato its faults
same correspondent says that it
seems the colonel wants the demo
craB of Utah to follow him to the
1 populists and the correspondent con
tinues
But Mr Editor I do not believe you would
be followed into to populietic camp by the
people of Utah nor by any considerable mini
ber of them
I It isa pity really that Optimist has
placed the opportunity in the way of
the blackguard to reiterate the non
sense of the first paragraph of the above
I
excerpt and in our first reply to Optim
ist we intimated that the Splatter
blotch was perhaps the inspiration of
the charge He though a bright
brainy an has driven thus his ducks
to a bad market
I If Optimists letter was written to
build up the democratic party in
1 Utah county and territory he will
pardon us if we say that he selected a
strange way of doing it in thus giving
the vile paper in I street the oppor
tunity to say what it does Now
really does he believe that the Splat
terblotch is panting with the intens
I
ity of its desire to build up the party
t > n democratIc nartv at home
Does he think the
Splatterblotch cares
astiyerfor anything in this connec
tion save to destroy the democratic
party at home THE DISPATCH and
Optimist differ only on one point 0
does not think it wrong for the presi
dent and congress to ignore the bi
metalic plank of the Chicago platform
while TilE DISPATCH does THE DIS
PATCH has never failed in affording
support and encouragement to the I
democracy in all democratic enter
prizes in this county But then when
the party in this territory or this I
county proposes to join Mr Cleveland
or Auybodyelse in dropping out
of the articles of
democratic faith
any
one of its fondly cherished principles
we propose to raise our voice in pro
jestWhen
When either the Enquirer oj Op
timist by insinuation or by direct
charge asserts that we would lead the
democracy into either the republican
orpopulist camps we Lava only to say
they utter a black falsehood without
shadeor jahadojv of truth It ia due to
THE DISPATCH to say this much and
it can only lament if in saying it the
Splatterblotchsfears of a lack of entire
harmony in democratic ranks are real
ized If the people of Utah never
go
intothe populistss campuntil THE DIS
PATCH leads them in that direction
< they will neyer arriye there We ad
mit that it is bad
too that this oppor
tunity for the slime spouting of the
Splatterblotch was ever given but no
fairminded or intelligent reaJer can I
truthfully charge us with having done II j I 1
it When Optimist
has served as
many months as we have years in I
democratic ranks he will learn that no
democrat will be cepsured tor sticking i
fli t 1he i literal reading of tha demo
ocratic faith nnmutilated by any save
by those democrats of the Splatt
blotch order
AT last it is settled There is to be
no dumping of the outhern Utes upon
Utah The committee has definitely
reported against the bill Mr Raw
lins is indeed entitled to all the grati
tude he will receive from the grateful
Jtonians Well done thou good and
faithful The most radical republi
can of this territory can do nothing
save voice the praise of Rawlins when
alluding to territorial interests in
Washington We predict for this emi
nent and eloquent centleman a
lengthy term of useful service to Utah
The fact is Joe Rawlins can reach out
and take what he wants and the peo
ple will ratify the act The beating of
that odious Ute la is not among the
smallest of his services to the common
wealth
THE hills east of Provo are full of
prospectors daily but on Sundays the
absence of the male population from
public worship is quite observabla It
is accounted for by the Sunday acces
sions to the cloud of prospectors in the
I hills We suppose Sunday labor is in
excusable but if there is any apology
for it surely hunting gold is as good a
one as could be offered
BILL DALTON has epal tell upon a
rather extended mission to the happy
hunting grounds No traveler on the
western railroads has yet been caught
weeping as do those who have no com
fort
THE Tribune has warm praise for De
Young the manager of the midwinter
fair If the Trib can see its wav to
that sort of thing it is a good one We
could not strain our conscience to that
extent with safety
THE tide is setting in the direction of
the Utah gold fields Every train
entering the territory brings its own
proper quota Let em come lhere
is enough here for all and to spare
THE quarrel now on between the
Deseret News and the Tribune re
sembles old times a bit Brethren
you should positively live together in
peace
WHILE Brekeuridge is blasting Mad
aline surely he is tetotally blasted by
the dirty case in which he is one of thu
leading characters
Now they are dealing with a crisis
in Peru It is a pity that our South
American friends cant get on without
a fuss of same sort
SILVER is rising but upon what
theory or why nobody can say defi
