THE CAMPAIGN
So far the campaign in Utah has
pone unquestionably in favor of the
democrats The masses of the people
fully appreciate the work done for the
territory by the democratic party since
its advent to power We are to
credit patriotic republicans also
with a love for their homes and an ap
preciation and gratitude for services
such as the democratic party has ren
dered The wisdom of nominating the
able and devoted man who under God
was the instrument in conferring
these massive benefits cannot now be
doubted His name has flashed into
all of our bright beautiful valleys tar
up the sides of our rugged mountains
out upon our deserts where the stock
men roam and into every workshop
school college and university or
wherever men toil and one mighty
shout has gone up it is a shout of en
thusiasm It is devotion to the man
who did more in eighteen months thau
all others who attempted to serve Utah
for the last thirty years Men women
childrenall shout for the brave hon
est servant of the people who has
crowned the territory with the diadem
of statehood and won for the church
and the people almost untold benefits
Unquestionably this is the chief ele
ment in the success which even now
seems perfectly certain and which is
growing surer an I brighter with each
passing hour Every democrats loins
are girded and all are working as men
do who deserve success The long
unbroken record of the partys friend
ship for Utah its efforts to srve her
its principles which apply so admirably
and fit so perfectly her every condi I
tion and surrounding all this goes to
juetify the party claim upon the al
legiance of the people of Utah and
they are meeting that sacred claim
like the honest faithful men they are
Added to this the illustrious
founders of the church its great lights
in all the history of the church and
territory from Joseph Smith down to
the venerable gentleman who now
stands at its head and the peo
ple belonged to the democratic
party in their simple charac
ters of men and citizens The in
terests of Utah lie altogether
with the theories of the democrats
now as they did in those days of hard
ship and sacrifice when Brigham
Young led the hosts of Zion across the
black wilderness to these rugged val
leys which are now smiling amide
these lofty mountains and the peace
plenty and happiness reigning on every
hand and in every heart
The opening of the Uiutah and Un
compaghre reservations by the demc
I
crats under the urgings of Mr Rawlins
our leader in the present fight the de
feat of the cruel project to unload the
southern Utps upon isan Juan county
the restoration of the escheated prop
erty the paying back of the money by
the government taken from tho church
by the republican party while in con
trol at Washington all these are
causes to incline honest people to favor
party producing such evidences of
zrieudship rather than that ciuel party
and policy which so cruelly despoiled
the people and the churh It is not
etranze that the people of Utah favor
Mr Rawlins and his party rather than
Mr Cannon and his party What
fair minded man can blame them
What fairminded man can fail to vote
for Rawlins rather than the other
Fairmindedness hones ty integrity
are qualities just as graceful and
an valuable in politics as they are in
the church in everyday business or in
the homes the people
These are positive benefits con
I ferred by the democracy and Joe L
Rawlins JSow will some illustrious IB I
publican point us to one single good
conferred by Mr Frank J Cannon or
the republican party
