PROVO CITY APRIL 3 1895
FOR GOOD OK FOIL EVIL
i I was the expected which happened
1 yesterday in the convention Tho de
bate closed early in the afternoon with
another great speech from Roberts and I
the female suffrage provision is a part
of the constitution either for good or
for evil We hope and pray that it will
not prove the very excuse that the ene
mies of Utah statehood were waiting
for in order to attack the constitution
upon its advent in Washington I is
right and proper to say here that so
far as that provision is concerned the
constitution will Jbe ratified by the peo
ple of Utah There is certainly a ma
jority for suffrage in this territory
Majorities unfortunately are not al
ways right albeit they always have
their way in this countrysave on the
silver question The people will loy
ally vote for the new constitution sim
ply because they desire statehood and
a vote against the constitution now on
this or any other proposition will in
effect be a yote against the admission
of the territory There are few bona
fide honest and patriotic people here
who will refuse to vote for the consti
tution upon this or any other ground
We confess that it strains our patri
otism to a painful tension but this one
question alone will not deter us I
evil comes out of yesterdays work
it will not be our fault We
have made the best fight against
the heresy that we could know
ing all the time just what this action
of the convention would be We are
compelled to bow to the will of the ma
jority but with the greatest reluctance
We fear as we have said all along
that when the east comes tt act that
it will be strong enough with the pres
idents aversion t the presence of two
more free silver senators and one free
silver representative i congress to
throw us out entirely and we will have
our suffrage constitution contempt
uously returned to us That would pIove
a disaster of the first water So many
graver and more important matters
hang upon our admission that we fear
that this excuse will prove to be a wel
come bit of news to the enemies of
statehood
I was opposed spiritedly by the op
ponents of suffrage In the convention
the knightly Roberts Keisel and
others but to no purpose The best of
the argument was with the opposition
but unfortunately the yotes were with
the advocates of the measure There
was one thing developed in the course
of this debate and that is the non
sense of committiuff parties by their
platforms t lily considered measures
simply t catch votes It is a danger
ous scheme and like all measures of up
frankness it will ultimately come to
grief 1 the presence of this provision
procures the rejection of the constitu
tion it will be then too late to file re
grets Nor do we believe that the con
stitution will receive the majority ot
the votes of the people that it would
have received had this provision been
left out or suffrage been relegated to
some future legislature What we are
most interested in now is to find some
sure way of escaping the evils which
we are afraid will overtake us by reason
of this very hasty if not unwise action
acton
of ours
How can we present this matter to a
president who truly or falsely is
not credited with a very great ardor for
any state in the west which advocates
free silver so that he can be induced
to approve a constitution which con
tains a very convenient provision to
warrant his rejection of it without un
covering his real motive The tempta
tion is rather a strong one to be pre
sented to our friend Grover He is a
faultless democrat on everything save
free silver will not relish the task of I
ratifying a provision which is distinc
tively antidemocratic to the extent that
female suffrage is Say what you
please of Mr Clevelands attitude on
silver yet In all other respects so far
as he has been as yet tested and he is
a democrat Sans puer et Sans re
proche
But be all this as it may we want to
say here and nowthat the grand Rob
erts in defeat preserves a proud place
in the affectionate confidence of the
people and he will hold it to the last
fleeing moment of his honorable
honest and manly life
THE next best paper to the New
Star in Utah THE DISPATCH is the
way this paper is sized up by the New
Star The New Star perhaps meant to
say that THE DISPATCH has the inde
pendence to speak out its honest senti
ments on any and all subjects I that
is the correct reading of our contem
porarys article then we fully appreci
ate the implied compliment But the
simple truth is while Coin is striking
in the right direction and is entitled to
the credit proper to it yet we dis
like to see the sacred cause of the re
storation of silver used in the shame
less way that W H Harvey uses it to
push his own private fortunes We
will not see it without raising our voice
in reproof He is a genius in the way
he hap harnessed the silver men to big

car in the matter of the publication of
Coin We will advertise for the book
but only at our aegular rates silver in

HILL and Kimball could be elimin
ated from the constitutional conven
tion and no very grave injury be in
flicted But it would be a grave in
jury t that body and the proposed
newstate of Utahif Roberts were bad
gered into resigning After this
phrensy has passed and when second
thought returns to the people this pa
per would not be very much surprised
if Delegate Roberts was triumphantly
sent to the United States senate as a
reward for his gallant fight against the
all unutterable modern fad of female
suffrage His great ability and breadth
of views would then have a field
worthy of the man and his power As
matters now stand both the voters at
our house are for Roberts for the
senate against all comers and there
are plenty of the same sort in Utah
THE history of Ihe present consti
tutional convention indicates that the
campaign next summer will be the
liveliest which has ever been before
waged in Utah Mens passions are
heated and there is just enough excite
ment among our fair sisters to insure a
very hot time The champions woul
do well to gird their loins and get
ready for the struggle of the ages at
least so far as the west is concerned
Tns Standard the new Boston daily
Vol 1 No 2 is on our table I is in I
dependent and its two main principles
are restricted immigration and fren
schools Now it would prove a gem of
purest ray serene i it would add free
silver to its other charms Of course
this is asking a good deal for Boston
but the west would pay well for that
simple addition in a big circulation
and unstinted praise
THE Brigham Bugler doesnt seem to
be living harmoniously with one patriot
of the name of Box who sued it last
year for 29900 and this year for
10000 Box Box up or give him
what he asks and get ri 1 of him Of
course that sum is but a mere bagatelle
to a newspaper I is astonishing how
mens views asjto the worth of character
differ
WE doubt if any save a western man
can understand or understanding silver
ver remonetization as a principle can
do it justice We want a western man
at the head of tho democratic ticket
upon a platfoim pledging the party
unequivocably to remonetization That
is the only combination which will
catch our vote for president next year
BISMABCK is universally honored in
Germany now Even the emperor has
taken the old statesman back to his
heart There is not in Christendom at
this moment a greater patriot nor a
I greater man than the Iron Chancellor
He i indeeda grand character
ONE holds his breath when he sees
silver mount to 67i What would it be
siver I
if we were to see silver again quoted i
at 8129 Ah tht would be a grand
day for Utah worth far more indeed
than woman suffrage
THE New Star isa little too hard upon
Bishop Whitney His brusqueries in de
bate are due more to political inexperi
ence than to unfriendliness to either
Mr Roberts on the cause he so ably
and gallantly champions
IT belongs of right to the democratic
party to restore silver and it cannot es
cape this glory i it tries never so hard
