Here is what Senator John P. Jones wrote to Hon. Enoch Strother, chair man State Central Committee of Ne vada: Washington, D. C., Sept 29. Dear Sir—Having become fully con vinced that the Republican party or ganisation is unalterably opposed to the free coinage of silver at the ratioof 16 to 1, except witli the consent of foreign gov minent» and at a ratio to be dictated by them, I have to an nounce that I can no longer act with the Republican party. J P. Jones Now read what that great Repub lican paper, the Salt Lake Tribune, of Sept. 6, said about Mr. Joues: "Benatni Jones is sn authority on silver. No man in the Union can ex plain so forcibly ss he the devaststion which has come through [ lieputdicanj demonetisation. In the conference at Brussels he stood out alone, the great commoner, whose arguments the fin anciers of Europe could not answer." When such sblc, far-seeing states men as Senator Jones denounce the g. o. p. for its hostility to free silver it requires a great deal of gall for the small lry Reps of the west to still hold thst their party favors free silver. But "gall" seems to he tne main plunk in Republican plat forma. Commenting on C. P. Huntington'« remarks in opposition to the govern ment owners! ip of railroads, the Chi cago Times says: "Under government control of railroads civil service regu lations would permit the ambitious employee to come up for examination and advancement to higher rank whever he had made due preparation. Positions would be permanent lor good men, pay would he regular, Re drew for abuses would he posaÜfe to even the humblest apprentice, and it is altogether probaMe that a pension system, having for it« object the care of superanuated employes and men injured in the discharge of their du ties would be a feature of the system of government control." There arc 245 lawyers in the House of Representative* and 64 in the Sen ate. That's why it takes Congross so long to pass a law, probably. The Salt Lake Herald says of three of Idaho's democratic candi dates: John R. Thatcher, of Gen tile valley, who has been nominated for lieutenant-governor of Idaho, is a well-known Mormon, nn old resi dent, highly respected and a thor ough democrat. He will be a Strength to the ticket. No will Jos eph C. Rich, of Bear Lake, as dis trict attorney for the Fifth judicial district, and J. R. Stoddard, of Cassia county, as state auditor The nomination of these gentlemen is the strongest evidence that can lie given of the breaking down of re ligious lines in Idaho affairs. The demiK-ratic party th«-re is certainly lient 011 doing justice to all classes and sections. Irving W. Lari more, physical di rector of Y. M. C. A , lie* Moines. One of the stock arguments of wool buyers and Republican orators and newspapers baa been that with wool upon the fre list this country would be flooded with cheap Australian wool and wools from the South American countries. The reason given for the depressed slate of the market is that there are great quantities of foreign wools, and especially that from Aus tralia, now licing offered upon the last tle eastern markets at 8 cents and less, it having been admitted free under the new tariff not. In consequence of that argument, or rather fallacy, Utah wool growers are being asked to aell their product for from 8 to 9 cents, the former being the more usual figure, and in a number of caoea they are doing the very thing requested by the buyer*. It is estimated that there is still in the neighborhood of 250,000 pounds of wool unsold or unconsigncd in this territory, and it is for this that the buyers are rushing around so fran tically. Proof ineontroveitilde was received in this city yesterday that the claims of both the buyers and the orators for the g. o, p., to the effect that wool is cheaper in Australia than in the United States, are false in every par ticular, and U is very plain that the Utah wool producers, in common with their fellow growers all over the United States, are being made the victims of a combined burines* and political For some lime past William game. Armstrong, of Halt Lake City, son of Hon. Francis Armstrong, and a gen tleman well posted on matters pertain ing to the sheep industry, has lieen in Australia, and at the request of his father, who desired the information for his own benefit, he visited all of the principal wool markets on the conti nent and made himself familiar with the price* and characters of the wools traded in. In a letter received in this city yesterday from the gentleman, ho announced that the lowest price re ceived in Australia for common range wools, which arc almul of the same grade as the Utah common wools, is 12 1 2 cents, while the better grades run as high a* 18 1 2 cents, all un scoured. It would he im)K>s«ible, he says, to send wool from Australia and sell it in the United States at the same prices now being received by the Utah The latter have no reason growers. hi fear an inundation of cheap Au» tralian wool«, for they are not to lie had. The clips ol the Australian flocks have been above the average, but this fact has not reduced the price very materially. In the letter came some samples of the several grades of wool raised iu Ihe province, and they are pronounced by experts to be no better than the Utah wools.
