ACTION TAKEN UNDER 8PECIAL
WAR ACT BY CANADIAN
GRAIN COMMISSION.
All High Grade Wheat Elevators
From Fort William to Atlantic
Coast are Commandeered, Esti
mated at 20,000,000 Buaheis.
Ottawa, Ont.—The Canadian gov
ernment has commandeered all high
grade wheat in elevators from Fort
Williams on Lake Superior to the At
lantic coast.
This action was taken under the
special war act by the Canadian grain
commission. The wheat seized was of
grades one hard and one, two and
three northern. It was the property
of grain shippers and millers. That
taken is all that which on Saturday
night was in public elevators at Fort
Fort William, Port Arthur, Midland,
Tlflfin, Pori) McNiichol, Collingwood,
Coderich, Kingston, Port Colborne,
Prescott, Quebec, St. John, Montreal
and Halifax.
A revised estimate places the
amount at about 20,000,000 bushels, A
considerable amount is the property
of American grain dealers.
The grain was taken Saturday night
so that grain exchanges should be af
fected as little as possible. It Is
officially stated that the price will be
fairly adjusted and the grain owners
promptly paid by the Canadian gov
ernment. It Is estimated that there
Is still In Canada in the hands of
farmers and dealers west of Fort Wil
liam, 150,000,000 bushels surplus of
wheat available for export. It Is er
pected that most of this will be taken
In the future for the use of Great
Britain, Franco and Italy. The domes
tic supply of Russia Is more than suf
ficient to meet the needs of that coun
try. Had the Dardanelles been forced,
the surplus of Russian wheat woul(l
have made the present action unnec
essary. While the wheat just taken
was commandeered to fill an order
from the British government for a
large quantity of wheat, It Is under
stood that most of it will be shipped
to Italy.
The Canadian government will look
after the transportation of the grain
to the Atlantic seaboard, and from
there its shipment across the ocean
will be undertaken by the British gov
ernment in the same way that ship
ments of oats and hay have been
handled for the past year.
British Losses for November.
London.—British casualty lists pub
lished during November total 1,232 of
ficers, 46,184 non-commissioned offi
cers and men In all fields of war, bring
ing the total since the beginning of
hostilities up to approximately 600,000.

A fifty thousand dollar three-story
otel is now assured for Payette.
The hoys of the Sunday schools of
Pocatello have organized a basketball
league.
The department of Industrial arts
and engineering of the Idaho Techni
cal institute at Pocatello will this year
graduate a class of trained engineers.
Idaho is going to profit greatly by
the coincidence of its exceptional crop
of beans and the increase in price in
cident to prevailing marketing condi
tions.
The inspectors of the French gov
ernment concluded their inspection of
horses at Caldwell last week, after
having accepted 11 carloads of mounts
and artillery animals.
Burglars entered the home of the
Rev. M. L. Hutton, pastor of the First
Congregational church of Pocatello,
and made away with silver and cloth
ing to the value of a'bout $50.
A laborer named Kinney was seri
ously injured while working at the
Potlatch Lumber company's camp near
Bovill, when a tree fell, hitting him
on the head and fracturing his skull.
Paymaster H. J. Hauser of the Unit
ed States navy, who is missing from
Pocatello, has not been found al
though a searching party has been
scouring the hills. They found a cig
arette case with his name.
More than three thousands tons of
beets, equavilent to at least fifteen
thousand dollars in value, were har
vested by the Aberdeen farmers dur
ing the past season. This is the first
crop of beets raised in that section.
George White, D. Woodall and Louis
Paradise, all of Soda Springs, were
taken into custody by the sheriff and
taken to Pocatello and lodged in Jail,
charged with illegal trafficking in
liquor and maintaining a common nui
sance.
Alfred Lundhi, the young sheepher
der who killed a neighboring herder
named Evangelist Pappas last June,
was convicted at Blackfoot of second
degree murder. The penalty is from
ten years to life imprisonment in the
penitentiary.
All previous records of annual min
eral production by the state of Idaho
will be exceeded by $5,000,000 to $6,
000,000 this year when the final totals
are made up, according to an unofficial
estimate made by Robert N. Bell, state
mine inspector.
From October 16 to November 13
the state paid out the sum of $16,
967.15 in bounties. In that time 6,041
coyotes were killed, 270 wildcats, 220
bears, 29 lynx, 26 wolves and 2 coug
ars. The total claims In that time
amounted to 986.
The Pocatello Transportation & In
terurban Railway company is now an
assured fact. Twenty-five of the city's
most prominent business men and cap
italists are behind the movement, and
the articles of incorporation will be
filed this week.
