Herald Subscription $1 00 per Annum „ _ . 8 . D. TAYLOR, Editor and Proprietor PIONEER PAPER OF KOOTENAI 00 - - - Senator Fairbanks of Indiana is being strongly urged as a run ning mate for President Roosevelt. The Kootenai Herald might feel honored by the amount of at tention it is receiving at the hands of its competitor (?) if the same came from a less ridiculous source. The New York democratic ma chine seem® anxious tc bring young Mayor McClellan out for the demo cratic nomination for president. It is said tha- this plan has the en dorsement of Ml. Bryan, and if so it makes McClellan a formidable candidate. In fact it is doubtful if) any man can be nominated without Bryan's consent. Joseph F. Smith, president of the Mormon church, was before the Smoot investigating committee one day last week, and his testimony was most sensational. He admitted that he was living in polygamy. He savs he has five wives and each of them has born him children since 1890, the date of the manifes to. His wives have borne him 11 children since that time, the polygamous antics of Joseph have little beating on the Smoot case, it certainly does look as though the Mormons were not liv ing up to their promises. While The campaign will soon be on in all its frenzy and the politician will be with us once again. Some peo ple profess a contempt for politics and it is to be admitted that some politicians are contemptible, but there are black sheep in every walk of life and it is wrong to think of politics as something to be spurned. Washington was a politician. So were Lincoln and McKinley and a long line of illustrious names. But they were not the kind ol men who made promises they never intended to fulfill, or gave the marble heart to the friends who elected them to positions of honor and trust. I'oli tics brings out the noblest as well as the meanest traits of man. In politics as in business, honesty is the best policy. And after all, it is the true, earnest, manly fel'ows who succeed for any length of time—the contemptible are found out sooner or later, and the people do the rest. There is at least one matter in connection with the wai between Russia and J ipan that the people of this country can not afford to overlook. We must not forget the friendship of Russia for the United States in the dark days of 1863. Louis Napoleon was plotting for the recognition of the Jefferson Davis confederacy and England was secretly giving aid and com-1 fort to the rebel cause. Both hoped to see the downfall of the powerful young republic of the western hemi sphere. It was while the Republic was almost overwhelmed with treason at home, and while these* plotters were at work abroad that Alexandei anchored a fleet of war vessels in New York harbor and another in San Francisco, the mean inn of which was that any foreign nation striking a blow at the United States would be ans we red by Russian shot and shell. This friendly action put an end Napoleon's pints and gave great en couragement to the friends of Union call these facts at this time.
