' How Diphtheria is Contracted
One often hoars the expression,
"My child caught a severe cold
which developed into diphtheria,"
when the truth was that the cold
had simply left the little one par
ticularly susceptible to the wander
ing diphtheria germ. If your child
has a cold when diphtheria is pre
valent you should take him out of
school and keep him off the street
until fully recovered, as there is a
hundred times more danger 'of his
taking diphtheria when he has a
cold. When Chamberlain's Cough

Outfit Will Save Lota of Work and

The diagram shown is of a home
made poultry fountain. The cistern is
a common barrel that is watertight,
connected to a "drinking tank by a
piece of pipe with one elbow as shown,
says a writer In The Farmer. A big
washer or something else of that shape
Is fastened on the end of the pipe at
"C" in order to make a sort of rim on
the inside of the pipe. "A" is a piece
of board used for a float and connected
in plunger, "B," by means of a wire.
This makes a self-locking vnlve so that
the water will flow In until the tank
gets full when the float pulls the
plunger up against the rim on the In
side of the pipe and shuts off the water
which flows In again as the water is
consumed. It is well to have the part
6f the tank where the valve is boxed

How "Miss" Came Into Use.
The origin of "Miss'' Is curious,
and, oddly, enough, an almost exact
date can be assigned when It first
came Into use. This was IGG2. when
notable women of doubtful reputation
and unmarried were so called, the
"Miss" being a flip abbreviation of
"Mistress," a title of respect for both
married and unmarried women. Tbe
word "miss," however, filled so Iona
felt a want that the public seized upon
it, ignoring its earlier connections,
and within 50 years it v.as well estab
lished.

A little boy was given a penny to
give to tbe Lord at church. He re
turned home to report that not seeing

man with a plate.
