There are several carloads of freight in Lewiston for Grangeville business men, and teams to haul it are scarce. Our stores are disposing of vast quantities of holiday goods. The children are certainly in for a good time at Christmas. Henry Wax had a grand opening aud public display of Christmas goods Tuesday. His store was thronged with visitors and pre sented a very attractive appear ance. Mt. Idaho lodge No. 7, I.O.O.F., will give a grand ball on Christ mas eve., Dec. 24, at their hall. Good music will be furnished. Tickets, including supper in ban quet room 82. J. A. Wilkinson has resigned his position in the Bargain Store to accept the management of a large establishment which will soon open up in Florence with a 825,000 stock of merchandise. P. II. Died. —At Florence, Idaho, De cember 11, 1897, Charles B. Wood, aged 52 years. The remains were brought to Grangeville on Satur day and interred on Monday by the Masonic fraternity. John Pollock arrived from Illin ois Wednesday on a visit to his daughter, Mrs. Robert Jones, who, we are glad to state, is now' on the road to recovery. H. E. Renshaw was up from Karaiab last week and reports a steady immigration of good settlers into that section. He is a member of the firm of Renshaw & Fronek, who are merchandising at that point. Mrs. Robie arrived from Slate creek last week to nurse her sick grandchild at Grant 'Benedict's. She will arrange before her depart ure for the river for the erection of a cottage on one of her vacant lots north of Main street. Will you give up all that health means to you? Scales Lieut Scales has been in the China and Japanese seas for two years and is home ou a brief furlough. There will be an instalation of the officers of the Masonic frater nity and order of Eastern Star on Dec. 27, at 7 p. m. All members of both orders and their families are invited to attend.— Geo. D. Rev. M. G. Mann the Sunday school missionary of the Presby tery of Walla Walla has changed bis appointment to preach at Harpster ou the 26th, to next Sun day, the 19th, at 11 o'clock. He will visit Elk City and spend Christmas aud the following Sun day theVe, preaching and organiz ing a Sunday school. Messrs. Vansise, Davidson aud W . H. Williams went to Florence last week to institute a mew lodge of Odd-Follows, which starts out with a membership of 15. They returned Monday and report an elegant time and royal treatment during their stay. F. Parker. . Cyrus Overman returned last week from a visit to his father's home in Ottumwa, Iowa. Mr. Overman states that the talk is general back in that section that the Burlington road will be ex tended from its present terminus at Billings, Mont., ou to the coast by next summer. This i-oad is the one that is expected to cross the Bitter Roots by the Lolo trail, come down the Clearwater canyon, tap the rich mining aud timber regions, open Camas prairie, the reservation and Lewiston countries and continue on to Portland through one of the richest reaches of undeveloped country that ever laid iu waiting for any railroad. Mr. Overman says that the under standing was so general along the Hue of the road that this extension would be made uext year that, he couldu't understand why it was not known out here.
