Manila, Feb. 10.—Yester day afternoon the American army under General Otis made a combined attack of r u r upon the insurgent outposts and bat teries which flank the town of Manila on two sides. The strongest native earthworks and batteries are at Calcoacas, some six miles from the town but well within range of the guns carried by the double turreted monitor Monadnock. At a signal from the tower of Delome church, the U. S. sig nal station, the Monadnock brought four of her big guns to play upon the Caloacas bat teries. ing of 2 The rebels reserved their lire until the bombarding from the Monitor, had ceased. Their earthworks were badly shattered, but they managed to poor deadly volleys of mus ketry into the American lines. A charge was then ordered and the Montana and Idaho regiments advanced at a double The First Kansas and a regi ment of artillery deployed to the right. The charge across the open in the face of a fear ful fusillade was gallantly made. The earthworks were captured and the enemy driv en out. The insurgents quickly re formed and had to be driven step by step backwards until they met the cross fire of the Kansas regiment and artillery stationed on the right. This completed the work begun by the Idaho and Montana boys Under a criss-cross fire the reb els were mown down like to grass. At 5:30 p. m. the Philippine flag was lowered from the Presidency. J Iowever, it turn out that although the insur gents were at their last gasp they still hid a kick left. When least expected a body of Philippine; hidden in the jungle poured a terrific fire in to the ranks of the First Penn regiment, at short The Americans re sylvania range. plied by bringing field artillery to bear and silencing this at tack with heavy volleys of shrapnell and shell. The Philippine troops re turned to their trenches.
