Idaho Connty Free Press be B. McBROOM, Editor and Proprietor. GRANGKVILLE IDAHO. OFFICIAL COUNTY PAPER. Thursday, Dec. 29, 1904 Government Running Behind. To the person fond of figures an interesting bit of reading is fur nished in the perusal of those re lating to the national expenditures for the past ten years. It is generally believed that our government revenues are largely in excess of government expenditures, but such is not always the rase. In the four years of President Cleveland's first administration the excess between income and out go was $100,000,000 per annum. When he retired from office he left a full treasury of which Presi dent Harrison speedly made ducks and drakes. When President Cleveland again took office there was no surplus in the United States treasury, and he was forced to meet the exigencies of a currency crisis and immencely increase the national obligation by borrowing money. President McKinley increased the debt so begun to meet the de mands of the war with Spain, al though war taxes were imposed and customs and internal revenue receipts were greatly increased. The fiscal year ending Juno 30, 1903, Bhowed'a surplus of $54,000, 000, and the fisoaljyear ending June 30, 1904, showed a deficit of $42,000,000. If the tax-payers of the nation would take time to do a little fig uring they would discover that it was not possible^ for the govern ment of the United States to make "both ends meet" without the im position of war taxés in time of peace, the deficit of. 1904 being caused by army and navy expendi tures. The question of stamp taxes is being vigorously, though quietly, agitated among tbe "standpatters" of the east, and it is not unlikely that such a source of revenue will be adopted to meet the great out go which the ultra military char acter of the present administration necessitates.—Butte Miner. it is is to to Some people get the mistaken idea in their heads that the only thing necessary for success is to "toot their own horuB. a man that is proud of his business or profession and has the courage to say to the world that his goods or his ability is equal to the best. But when a man thinks that he is 'IT' and tries to tell an intelligent public that he is the only mau that accomplishes results, that he is the only man that can do good printing we simply pitty him. If such peo ple had half the ability they try to make people think they have they would certainly be gobbled up by curio hunters instead of being left to bloom alone and waste their fr agrance on the desert air. We like I, i y The Idaho legislature will con next Monday at Boise and the vene people are wondering what new laws will be enacted. With no senator to elect we should get some good and wholsome legisla tion. At present the most promi nent issne seems to be whether or not an extension of time will be granted for the removal of timber fiom state lands, the timber having recently been purchased by an eastern syndicate. Is republican prosperity a farce ? Since the late election there is a general slump throught the United States in business matters, with no indication of improvement. Parker had been elected we should have seen the republican news papers attributing it to democratic success, and saying " I told you •o." If The Nampa Leader and Herald have consolidated, and will here after appear as the Leader-Herald. C. T. Harte, former editor of the Herald, will retire from the busi ness, and his partner, C. Hill, pur chases an interest in the Leader. The annual meeting of the Ida ho editors will be held at Boise on January 17 aud a large number of newspaper men are expected to be present. Santa Clans found plenty of snow on Camas Prairie for his sleigh Christmas eve. The Philippine railroad subsidy bill has passed the senate and will be promptly approved by the president. It provides for the pay ment of four per cent, annual in terest, for 30 years upon al! capital invested in the Philippines in the construction of railroad lines. The equipment is also to be admitted into the islands free of all duty, and the investors are permitted to import all the Chinese coolie labor they may require in the construc tion of the roads. This is one of the greatest grafts of modern times, and is for special benefit of E. H. Harri man and the other heads of the Northern Securities merger, which has purchased all the fran chises granted by the old Spanish government for railroad purposes. re our in he in he by al of it of is There is a strong effort being made to increase the number of forest ranges on the public reserves, it being- claimed that the increase is necessary to protect the timber from fires. It is well known by people living near these reserves that the rangers are practically powerless to prevent or extinguish fires and if the force was increased several times the loss from fires could not be noticibly less. Our titulier, it is true, is one of our most valuable public possessions but it is in greater need of protec tion from land sharks who are re ceiving special grants from our public officials, than from fire. The Standard Industrial edition is out and, apart from thé few typographical errors that are bound to creep into such work, is a very neat production. Don't resolve that you are going to do better at the beginning of the new year but do it. . Estray Notice.
