Lewiston bad a $100,000 fire Monday morning and but for an efficient water system the entire business portion of the city would have been destroyed. Mrs. A. C. Hawson and Mrs. F. J. Reed left last night for Portland where they will visit the fair and purchase a stock of fall millinery for Mrs. Hawson's store. H, Mitchell and little daughter arrived here Monday night from Lewiston to join Mr. Mitchell who has decided to remain in Grangeville permanently. Owing to the absence of Council men Wiltse, Adams and Hocker smith no meeting of the city council was held Monday night and bills will be allowed next Mon day. The regular term of the district court will convene here on the 28th of this month and it is reported that Judge Steele will be here a week earlier to bear cases in cham bers. Superintendent Carpenter is ar ranging an extensive program for the teachers' institute next week. Everyone interested in schools is invited to attend as often as con venient. Fred Clarke came up from Port land Tuesday night to accept his old position'in the Jersey House grill room. He was accompanied by Paul Thing who will also take a place there. The open season for killing prai rie chickens and grouse begins next Tuesday and local sportsmen are preparing for the event. Birds are reported plentiful aud good shoot ing is expected. Tbe ladies of the W. R. C. will serve dinner at their hall in the I. O. O. F. building next Saturday. The ladies always provide abund antly aud the public iB cordially invited to partake. A. H. McGrew and family ar rived here Sunday from Ashland, Oregon, where they have been for a year past. Mr. McGrew has disposed of his interests there and is hack to Camas Prairie to stay. The elocutionary contest to be given next Tuesday night by the students of the Lewis Commercial school promises to be a moet inter esting entertainment. Tickets can be secured at Pulse's drug store. Dr. Frank Carrothers and family who havebeeu visiting John Coram for several weeks past left yesterday for their home in Michigan. Dr. Carrothers is greatly pleased with this country and may retnrn later. Prof Lewis has had the hall wired for the elocutionary contest next Tuesday night which will greatly improve the acoustic con ditions and every word can be easily understood in any part of tbe ball. Mr. Gold stone has decided to retire from the mercantile businees, and begin ning the first of next month he will dose out his entire stock of goods. Prof. H. Cobbs, the newly elected principal of the Grangeville schools arrived in the city yesterday and is getting acqnainted with the pa trons. Prof. Cobbs' reputation as an instructor is well known throughout the state and our people are fortunate in securing his ser vices. Parties intending to bring in grain for the Parker- Robertson exhibit for the Portland fair are requested to have same on hand at their office not later than August 15, as it is hoped to ship the entire exhibit by August 20. The prises will be awarded by Messrs. John Coram, Norwood and Hattabangh. Capt. James Woodward returned last week from Portland and re ports a pleasant trip. He will leave aboot the first of September for Denver, Colorado, where he goes to represent the G. A. R. of Idaho at the national encampment. From there he will make a visit to relatives in Texas before returning. Joe Sorrow left Monday for Spo kane to receive treatment for rheumatism. He has suffered greatly during the past year and if he gets no relief in Spokane will try other places before returning. During his absence R.
